Section-A (5x (6/7) = 30/35 marks)

Attempt any six parts

Q1.
i. Prove that the force exerted by a jet of water on a fixed semi circular plate in the
direction of the jet strikes at the centre of the semi circular plate in the direction of
the jet when the jet strikes at the centre of the semi circular plate is two times the
force exerted by the jet on the fixed vertical plate.
ii. What do you understand by hydrodynamic machine?
iii. Define hydraulic efficiency and overall efficiency in case of impulse turbine.
iv. What do you mean by jet ratio and speed ratio?
v. What is the function of splitter and casing in pelton turbine?
vi. What is the function of hydraulic intensifier?
vii. What do you mean by slip and negative slip in reciprocating pump?
viii. What is the difference between impulse and reaction turbine?
ix. Explain the guide mechanism in francis reaction turbine.
x. A pelton wheel works under a net head of 600 m and it runs at a speed of 720 rpm.
The mean pitch diameter of runner is 1.2m for a discharge rate of 0.2m3/sec, find the
power available at the nozzle and hydraulic efficiency of turbine. [2+3]
xi. Derive the specific speed of a turbine.

Section B (10x4=40 marks)

Long Answer Type Questions: Marks 10x4=40

Attempt any four questions

Q.2 (a) Diameter at entrance and exit of an inward flow reaction turbine are 1m and 0.6 m
respectively. The hydraulic efficiency of the turbine is 90% and the head on turbine is 36m.
Discharge at outlet is radial and velocity of flow at outlet is 2.5m/sec. vane angle at outlet is 150
and width of wheel at inlet and outlet is 0.1m. Determine absolute blade angle at inlet.
(b) Explain the general layout of hydro electric plant with the help of a neat sketch.

Q.3 Explain the working of single acting reciprocating pump with the help of neat diagram.

Q.4 Explain different type of casings used in centrifugal pump.

Q.5 (i) Write a short note on various applications of a centrifugal pump.

(ii) A three throw pump has cylinders of 225 mm diameter and stroke of 450mm each. The
pump is required to deliver 75 lit/sec at a head of 90 m. frictional losses are estimated to be 1m
in suction pipe and 18m in delivery pipe. Velocity of water in delivery pipe is 0.9 m/sec,
overall pump efficiency is 82% and slip is 2.5%. Determine speed of the pump.
