TRACTOR PACKING LIST (A ihe complete tractor is shipped in two cattons. One contains the frame, wheels, engine and gear case as- semblies, and the other contains the handles, clutch rods and lovers. The kick stomd (A) enables the tractor to be kept level when implements are not attached. The protective hood (B) is hinged at the front, To lift, push the two latches (C) slightly and lift hood, To tum olf the engine, press shut-olf button (D) until engine stops Tho hood may be romoved at any time should you desire, To remove hood, pull out wire and hinge will separate. The engine is shut off when hood is removed by flipping the salety stop switch against the spark plug The salety stop switch will remain against the spark plug until removed, Be sure to lift it off before trying fo start engine. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSEMBLING Before bolting handles to frame, insezt throttle cable through cable housing clamp (E) as shown, 1, Bolt handles to the outside of tractor frame as shown, Handle bolts (F) are shipped inserted in the frame, NOTE: When bolting handles to tho frame, be sure that the bushing, washers, clutch lever and lever stop. are re-cssembled in the same sequence az packed, To provide clearance for attachments, it is recom mended that uppor left handle holt be installed head. fo outside as shown, Install the other three with heads to inside. 2. Attach clutch red (G) to lower clutch lever (H) and to upper clutch lever (I) as shown, e 3, Lower clutch lover (H) should rest on lever stop (J) when upper clutch lever (1) is forward. 4. Aitach clutch red (K) to idler arm as shown at (L). Figure 2 illustrates this assembly in detail, 5. Atlach reverse rod (M, Fig. 2) to bearing housing (MN, Fig. 2) as shown, 6. Ploase refer to Figure 1. Attach throttle control lever (R) to the lelt hand handle with the throttle cable strung under the handle, 7. Clamp throttle cable to the handle with three clamps (S) as shown, NOTE: Screws and clamps for cable and throttle lever are packed in mailing bag tied to cable. OPERATION Bofore Starting Engine, Be Sure Safety Stop Switch Is Lifted Off Of Spark Plug. ‘To shift from forward to reverse, release clutch by push- ing forward on right hand cluteh lever (T). Pulling back on handle on reverse rod (M) will enmesh the reverse goar. Pull back on right hand clutch lever (T) to engage clutch. Te go forward, release clutch, push forward on rod (M), then engage clutch. Be sure to release clutch before changing gears, Failure to do so will cause a sudden slart which puts extreme strain on gears, ‘TWO FORWARD SPEEDS — See Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 ‘The Model LC tractor has two forward speeds. Engine pulley position for these speeds are illustrated in Fig- ures 2 and 3. Figure 2 illustrates the High Speed, ree- ‘ommended for all attachments except tiller. Notice in Figure 2 that the lock bar pin (U) is located in second hole from rear of lock bar (V). When changing t» low speed, please refer to Figure 3. Re:nove Belt. Loosen engine pulley set screw (W), remove engine pulley, Page 1 tum it around and replace with large pulley to outside ‘as shown in Figure 3. Mako visual alignment of engine, idler and transmission pulleys, then tighten engine pulley set serow, Remove spring clip (X) and lock bar pin (U). Pull transmission slightly to the rear so that pin (U) will enter rear hole as shown in Figure 3, To facilitate this adjust- ment, a convenient handle (Y) is provided. Replace spring clip (X) to hold pin, Replace tractor drive belt. Biter changing from one speed to another, adjust set collar on spring (2) so spring is compressed approxi- mately ‘%” when clutch lever (T, Fig. 1) is pulled back over center To avoid damaging belt, uso minimum tension required to drive the tractor. To avoid creeping and to afford proper declutching of tractor, belt stops should be adjusted to Ys" of the belt when the belt is tight. Miles per hour at rated RPM in each speed: Tighe awe err LUBRICATION ‘The tractor but not the engine (see Engine Instruction Book) is fully Nubriccted and ready for use when Page 2 There are four high pressure. grease fittings on the tractor, one grease fitting on the idler pulley, one on the main cxle housing, one on the gear caso and one on the bearing housing. They are located in Fig. 3 and designated with letter (G). Grease the idler pulley ev ery 4 to 6 hours of uso. Grease the main axle housing every 12 to 15 hours of use. The gear case housing will require a few shots of grease every 40 to 50 hours of uso, Lubricate the beating housing every 5 to 6 hours of operation. Use a general purpose semi-solid grease in the grease gun supplied with the tractor. Be sure to check level of cil in air filter as recommended in engine manual, TIRE PRESSURE For shipping purposes, tractor tires are inflated to ‘approximately 38 Ibs. When tractor is assembled and ready for use, deflate tires to 8 to 10 Ibs. of prossute. (Tire is lug type and proper selting of tire lug ts neces: mning, ‘Be sure tires are mounted as shown in ilustration). PATENTED QUICK-HITCH All front attachments {o the tractor use the patented Quick-Hitch shown above. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ATTACHING Alter loosening T-nuls (A), push the tractor forward until slots (B) engage at (E) belween the sideplates and hitch clamp on the attachment, Push down on the tract’ handles until shaft (C) fits in slot (D). Tighten T-nut. J (A). To remove attachment, loosen T-nuts (A) sulli-~ ciently so side plate can be pulled over catch (X) on side of frame, MODEL H 5% H.P. TRACTOR—MODEL VC 7 H.P. TRACTOR PACKING LIST The tractor is shipped in two packages. One contains the engine, frame, wheels and gear assemblies, and the other contains the handles, clutch rods and levers. The tractor is equipped with a convenient kick stand (AX). This stand enables the tractor to be kept level when implements are not attached. ASSEMBLY Before staring assembly, remove all paris from both packages. Refer to Fig. I for tractor assembly. 1. Before bolting handles to the frame, insert the throt- ‘tle cable (AC) through the cable housing clamp (AE) as shown, 2, Bolt the handles to the outside of the frame with the four bolts provided. NOTE: When bolting handles to the frame, be suro that the bushings, washers, levers and lever stops are reassembled in the same sequence cs packed. 3. When inserting upper left hand handle belt, as- semble lower cluich lever (Q), lever stops (PY and lower clutch pivet lever (M) Gs shown. 4. The slots at the bottom of the handle provide handle hoight adjustment, Place handles in comfortable gperating position and tighten all handlo bolts securely. 5. Attach upper clutch rod (R) to lower clutch lever (Q) and Teil hand clutch lever (B) 6. Attach upper idler rod (L) to right hand clutch levor (DJ, then to lower clutch pivol lever (M), and to idler clutch rod guide (X 7. Connect lower idlor rod (Y) in guide assembly (X) to idler lever (AZ) as shown. 8, Thread one end of spring (BN) into lower spring holder (BP). Place upper spring holder (BM) over end of geat shift handle exlonsion as shown and slip handle extension into coupling (C). Be sure countersunk hole in end of handle extension lines up with set screw and tighten securely. 9. Thread other end of spring (BN) into upper spring holder (BM) and position spring holder on handle extension as shown, approximately 3 inches from coupling. 10, For Model "VC" only. Attach throttle control lever (AA) to lelt handle with throttle clamp strung under- noath. Screws and clamps for cable and throttle lever are in a mailing bag tied to the throitle cable. Clamp throttle eable lo handle with three clips (AD) ‘as shown, 10A. For Model "H" only. Attach Choke-A-Matic control ever (AA) to leit handle with throtile cable strung undemeuth. Screws and clamps for cable and control lover are in @ mailing bag tied to the cable. Glamp cabie to handle with three clips (AD) ce The Choke-A-Matic engine control is adjusted at the factory for proper operation. If it becomes neces- Page 3 sary to recheck this adjustment, refer to instructions above, Fig. 2, and set control lever on handle bars to “fast” (high speed) position, then observe position of slide lever (B) through opening (D). If adjusted properly, this slide lever should be just touching the choke operating pin (C). If the unit is out of adjust- ment, loosen cable clamp screw (A) and move slide lever (B) up or down uniil it just touches the choke operating pin (C), For other information concerning the Choke-A-Matic control refer to the Briggs & Stratton engine manual furnished with your tractor, LL. Attach shift rod (H) to clevis assembly as shown in Fig. 3. Hold in place with cotter pin, 12, IMPORTANT — Be sure to adjust rod guide ()), Fig. 1, with nut so that its nylon liner will exert pressure on shift rod (i), This adjustment must be properly maintained to insure that the two speed axle will stay in the speed range selected. ‘ADJUSTMENTS 1, Adjust set collar on rod guide assembly (X), Fig. 3, 0 that spring (W) is compressed approximately % inch when right hand lever (D), Fig. 1, is pulled back and cluich engaged, 2, Place the belt stops as shown within Y% inch of the belt when belt is tight, 3. Be sure that the bolts which hold the belt stops are lightened sufficiently to keep belt stops from moving. 4. Limit the travel of the idler pulley so that the drive belt is released just sufficiently to slip on the engine pulley. This adjustment is made by solting position 9f the lever stop (P] at base of lever (M). 5. To obtain widest tread adjustment, remove the hub bolts and whee! from the hub and place on opposite side of tractor, (Tire is lug type and proper set. ting of the tire lug is necessary for cleaning) SELECTIVE GEAR TRANSMISSION BE SURE RIGHT HAND CLUTCH LEVER IS IN ITS FORWARD POSITION BEFORE SELECTING DESIRED SPEED. To change speeds disengage clutch by pushing forward on right hand cluich (D). Lift up on gear shift handle and select speed desired as indicated by pointer. A slight downward movement of the gear shift handle will engage the gears. Page 4 Engage clutch by pulling back on right hand clutch lever (D). SPEED RANGE—2 SPEED AXLE Shift rod (H) controls high and low speed ranges. To place tractor in high speed range, lift up on handle of shift rod (HD, for low speed range push down on handle on shift rod (H). CONTROLLED TRACTION DIFFERENTIAL The Models H & VC tractors are equipped with Con- trolled Traction Differential, Adjusting bolts (A, Fig. 4) in wheel hub (B), provides pressure against a nylon plug and sleeve around tractor axle to prevent excessive wheel slippage when tractor is being used under abnor- mally slippery conditions. The adjusting bolts (A) are adjusted at the factory to « torque of 20 ft Ibs. As the nylon sets itself through use, it may be necessary to readjust bolts (A) a few times to maintain 20 ft. Ib. torque (20 Ib. weight on wrench 1 ft. long). CAUTION — DO NOT APPLY MORE THAN 30 FT. LBS. TO THE. ADJUSTING BOLTS, LUBRICATION The tractor, but not the engine, (see engine instruction book), is fully lubricated and ready lor use when re- ceived, CAUTION: CHECK TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL AT PLUG PROVIDED. LOSS OF Ol. MIGHT OCCUR DUE TO IMPROPER HANDLING IN SHIPPING. If ade tional oil is needed add SAE No. 90 oil to proper level. Excessive amount of oil may cause damage to oll secs, Thero are 4 high pressure grease fittings and 3 oil plugs cn the tractor. The grease fillings are located on the {idler pulley. the main axle housing, the gear case, and the differential housing. They are located in Fig. 3 and designated with letter (G). Add a few shots of grease approximately every 8 hours of use to all fillings. Use a general purpose semisolid grease in the grease gun supplied with the tractor. The three oil plugs are located on the transmission gear case‘and cover (F, Fig. 3). The filler plug is on the transmission case cover, the oil level plug on the rear of the transmission case, and the drain plug on the bot- tom of the transmission case. To fill transmission remove filler and oil level plugs and pour oil into filler plug opening until it rises to the oil level plug opening. (Be sure the tractor is standing level). Replace plugs and fighton securely, Add fresh oil as required. Use SAE No. 90 oil all year round in the transmission. TIRE PRESSURE For shipping purposes the tires are inflated to, approxi- mately 38 Ibs, When tracior is assembled and ready for ‘use deflate tires to 8 to 10 Ibe. of pressure, How to Order Repair Parts for Simplicity Tractors ‘The Authotized Simplicity dealer from whom. you purchased your Tractor can supply you ‘with any replacement parts you may need. OFF, PACKING LIST The complete tractor is shipped in two cartons. One coniains the frame, wheels, engine and gear case as- semblies, and the other contains the handles, clutch rods ‘and levers ‘The kick stand (A) enables the tractor to be kept level when implements are not altached. The protective hood (B) is hinged at the front. To lilt, push the two latches (C) slightly and lift hood. To turn off the engine, press shut-off button (D) until engine stops. ‘The hood may be removed at any time should you desire. To remove hood, pull out wire and hinge will separate. The engine is shut off whon hood is removed by flipping the safety stop switch against the spark plug. The safely stop switch will remain against the spark plig until removed. Be sure to lift it off before trying fo start engine. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSEMBLING Before bolting handles to frame, insert throttle cable through cable housing clamp (E} as shown. 1. Bolt handles to the outside of tractor frame as shown, Handle bolts (F) are shipped insorted in the frame, NOTE: When bolting handles to the frame, be sure that the bushing, washers, clutch lever and lever stop ate re-assembled in the same sequence as packed, To provide clearance for attachments, it is recom- mended that upper left handle bolt be installed head to outside as shown. Clamp throttle eable to the handle with three clamps (8) as shown, NOTE: Screws and clamps for cable and throttle lever ate packed in mailing bag tied to cable OPERATION Before Starting Engine, Be Sure Safety Stop Switch Is Lifted Off Of Spark Plug. ‘To shift from forward to reverse, release clutch by push. ing forward on right hand clutch lever (7). Pulling back on handle on reverse rod (M) will enmosh the feverse gear. Pull back on right hand clutch lever (7) fo engage clutch, To qo forward, release clutch, push forward on rod (M), then engage clutch, Be sure to release clutch before changing gears. Remove spring clip (X) and lock bar pin (U). Pull transmission slightly to the rear so that pin (U) will enter rear hole as shown in Figure 3. To facilitate this adjust- ment, a convenient handle (¥) is provided. Replace spring clip (X) to hold pin. Page 4 SIMPLICITY MANUFACTURING COMPANY There are four high pressure grease fittings on the tractor, one grease fitting on the idler pulley, one on the main axle housing, one on the gear case and one housing, They are located in Fig. 3 and designated with letter (G). Grease the idler pulley ev- ery 4 to 6 hours of use. Grease the main axle housing every 12 to 15 hours of use. The gear case housing will require a fow shots of groaso every 40 to $0 hours of use. Lubricate the beating housing every 5 to 6 hours of operation with a general purpose semi-solid grease, TIRE PRESSURE For shipping purposes, tractor tires are inflated to approximately 38 Ibs. When tractor is assembled and ready for use, deflate tires to 8 to 10 Ibs. of pressure, TREAD ADJUSTMENT ‘ Above picture illustrates the position of the minimum (~ and maximum width of the tractor wheels. To obtain maximum position, remove the hub bolts and wheel from the hub, and place on opposite side of the tractor. (Tire is lug type and proper setting of tire lug is neces- sary for cleaning. Be sure tires are mounted as shown in illustration), PATENTED QUICK-HITCH All front allachments to the tractor use the patented Quick-Hitch shown above. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ATTACHING Alter loosening T-nuts (A), push the tractor forward until slots (B) engage at (E) between the sideplates and hitch clamp on the attachment. Push down on the tractor = handles until shaft (C) fits in slot’ (D), Tighten T-nuts (A).
