Answer all the questions

1. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
After lunch, without waiting to get permission from their parents, the two boys set off to explore the part of the
91 UT

beach which lay beyond the headland. They persuaded their young sister to stay behind, saying the long walk would

be too tiring for her. Once they had passed beyond the headland, the beach stretched away endlessly in front of
them. It was like discerning a new world. And what exciting things there were to do! There were damp, dark caves
98 L

to explore, in each of which they half expected to come across animals sleeping there; there were innumerable pools
among the rocks, full of small fish and other sea-creatures; and, scattered along the beach, there were all those
SO

strange, yet commonplace objects which are washed up and left by the tide.
The afternoon passed quickly and the sun was already beginning to go down when the two boys reluctantly
decided to turn back and make their way homewards. Long before they reached headland, however, they could see
that the tide had come in so far that they were now cut off from the other part of the beach. They looked at each other
U

in dismay. It was useless to go on, since clearly there was no way of getting beyond the headland. If, on the other
hand they went back the way they had just come, the tide would come in long before they reached the end of the
O

beach. Their only chance of escape was to find a way up the cliff, which in some places was not very steep. At least
N

they might be able to climb high enough to be out of reach of the waves, which were coming closer all the time.
In less than ten minutes they found a narrow path which seemed to lead all the way to the cliff top. But their
IG

troubles were not yet over. Halfway up, the path was blocked by a large rock, which they could not climb over. The
two boys at once began shouting at the top of their voices, hoping that someone walking along the cliff top might
hear them. They were both surprised, however, when their father’s face appeared over the top of the rock. He told
them not to move until he came back. In a short while he reappeared with two policemen, one of whom climbed
down a rope which was lowered over the rock. The two boys were then pulled up to safety. At the top of the cliff
they found their anxious mother and, with her, their young sister. She had told her parents where they had gone and
thus saved them from spending a wet night on the cliff.
Q. 1. (a) Say whether the following statements are true or false:
(a) The boys knew the part of the beach which lay beyond the headland quite well.
(b) The boy’s father climbed down to rescue them.
Ans. (a) True; (b) False

Q. 1. (b) Answer the following questions briefly, using your own words as far as possible.
(a) How did the two boys spend their time on the beach?
Ans. The enjoyed the mseles in dark caves. They also enjoyed the numgber of pools among the rocks, which
are filled with small fish and other sea creatures.
(b) Why did the two boys look at each other in dismay?
Ans. When the two boys reached the head land they find themselves cut off from the other part of the beach.
Hence, they looked at each other in dismay.
(c) How did their parents know where to look for the two boys.
Ans. When the two boys set off to explore the part of the beach. They actually told their young sister that they
are going to explore the beach. Moreover they persuaded her to stay behind that it her to stay behind that it could be

very timing for her. So there is a very Food possibility that their sister told the paresh that the boys were went to
explore the beach.

is the way up the cliff, which is actually steep in many places. I am unable to climb high enough to be out of reach

Q. 3. Write a paragraph in about 200 words choosing one of the topic sentences listed below:
Reading for pleasure is a hobby we are losing
Ans. Books have always been a medium by which we escape the reality and go into a fantasy world where we
are not burdened by responsibilities and where we can do as we please. They take us to a magical place which can
be a fairy-tale, a story full of ghosts or a wartime epic. There are no boundaries and no right or wrong in books. We
get to take our pick about the kind of story we want to get into. We can relive the Ramayana or Mahabharata through
the books anytime we want.
But if we want to get into the story of a book, we need a lot of patience and focus which we seem to be losing
these days. We keep running after our life and just don’t get the time to calm down and relax even for a bit. We seem

WWW.IGNOUASSIGNMENTS.IN 4
WE PROVISE HEL,SOLVED ASSIGNMENT,PROJECT WORK

to be losing the art of reading as we have found alternatives for it. Rather than reading books like Harry Potter, we
prefer to watch the movie instead. We can’t seem to invest the time that a book will take and try to look for
alternatives, if we can find any.
Also, a very interesting thing that has come up in the recent times is the way people try to fake cultural literacy.
Many people just act like they read a lot of books in order to fit in with their peers and they feel like they will not be
considered smart if anyone found out that they don’t read books. People don’t want to feel left out of conversations.
To avoid such a situation, they just read about the book that seems to be the hot topic so that they can be a part of the
conversation when their friends talk about it. Instead of investing the time to actually read that book, they just read
the summary or the review to be able to talk about it.
Books are for your pleasure and to increase your knowledge. But this way, you learn nothing. You are just trying

N
really hard to gain the acceptance of your peers and for that one should know that faking cultural literacy isn’t going
to do the trick. This isn’t restricted to mere books. The same thing goes for TV series as well as sports.

SE
Somewhere down the line, we have lost our commitment to these hard pages that we so eagerly used to stare at.
There was a time when we used to grasp every single word of the book we used to read. Now, we just want to rush
through the book so that we can get to the end and get it over with. This should not be our reason to read a book. We

U
should read the book to enjoy it and to cherish it. We have these huge piles of books that we like to collect even if
we read them or not. We think that they probably reflect our intelligence level but we must realize that a book has

50 HO
no value when it is just kept on your shelf. But a book becomes invaluable as soon as one reads it. One cannot put
a price on knowledge or pleasure that is attained after reading a book.
It’s time for us to wonder whether pretending to have read a book is actually of any help or does it have no
importance at all. Reading is an art. We must try to focus on giving ourselves entirely to the story that we are

80 N
reading.
A visit to a foreign country is always filled with surprises
26 IO
Ans. Travelling to a new country is always full of surprises but for many foreigners travelling to China for the
first time, the initial culture shock can be quite severe. Surprises are at almost every turn. To say Chinese people eat
everything, anywhere, any time is not an exaggeration. You’ll see people forever eating snacks, day or night. Or,
91 UT

more than likely, enjoying midnight [or later] feasts on the streets. The most surprising thing, though, is that they’ll
eat parts of an animal you’d never think possible.
You’ll already know it’s a big country with a large population. But just how big? Well, it has 1.3 billion people
98 L

and counting. There’s a huge diversity in culture and customs. In fact, you’ll even find that some people in the south
SO

don’t understand the language of people in the north or east.

Maybe not as common as, say, 10-15 years ago, but many Chinese people, especially in the more rural areas,
find foreigners objects of fascination. Curiosity is expressed openly and the more different you are the more you’ll
be looked at. Not to mind though it’s all in good humour and nothing a friendly wave or smile can’t dissipate.
U

The weather varies greatly as one would expect in a very big country. Beijing and some northern cities are
“famous” for their pollution and, unfortunately, matters are getting worse. If you want to travel to Beijing to visit
O

places of interest, it’s best to wear a face mask. In the southern areas, the air is relatively clearer but temperatures
can vary widely and, for example, the lack of heating in many apartments can be an issue. No doubt you might be
N

able to add another dozen or so “surprises” you might encounter when travelling in China but we hope these 5 will
help get you thinking. If you are keen to learn how to speak Chinese then travelling to China is going to be the best
IG

way. Don’t worry, though, you’ll soon get over any real surprises and will surely enjoy your stay!
I would like to donate parts of my body after my death
Ans. I find the post death rituals as a complete waste. Be it cremation or burial or whatever - to me, they are
all a big waste. I find a lot of celebrities endorsing eye/organ donation - but I want to donate my complete body.
I wish that after I die, all of my body is used as a cadaver for medical students to learn. Whether or not organs
or tissue are actually used for transplant depends on several factors, like their quality and whether or not you die in
hospital. Not all organs and tissue types are suitable for transplant. Organs that can be transplanted are the heart,
kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas and intestines. The skin, bone tissue (including tendons and cartilage), cornea, heart
valves and blood vessels are transplantable forms of tissue.
Organ donation is only possible when the donor has died in hospital. Organs need a supply of oxygen-rich
blood to remain suitable for transplantation. Donors are put on artificial respiration to keep their heart beating, so

WWW.IGNOUASSIGNMENTS.IN 5
WE PROVISE HEL,SOLVED ASSIGNMENT,PROJECT WORK

that oxygen-rich blood continues to circulate through their body. By contrast, tissue donation is often possible if the
donor dies in a non-hospital setting.
There is no maximum age for donation in the general sense. Although the heart of an 80-year-old person would
be too old for transplantation, their skin might still be suitable.
