Joseph Fisher
UC PROBLEM

Subject to:
Real power balance constraint,
Real power operating limits,
Spinning reserve constraint
Minimum uptime & downtime of unit, and
Startup cost of the unit
Methods Applied to Solve
UC Problem
Deterministic approach
LP, DP
Meta heuristic approach
GA, MA, SA, and TS, etc
Hybrid approach
integer & mixed-integer adopting LP
The ‘Agent Ant’
An agent (software) mimicking the behavioral
patterns of ants.
Possess the following attributes:-
- memory,
- exist in a discrete environment,
- pseudo blind, and
- intelligent algorithmic code
The Beehive Approach
Adopting hive structure and construction.

The ‘drones kicked-out’ system.

The beehive cells to mimic units in a

generation system.
Spider Approach
Spider Approach
 Spiders are skilful engineers, gifted with
amazing planning skills. The silk material that
allows them to precisely design rigorous and
functional webs has chemical properties that
make it lustrous, strong and light. It’s stronger
than steel and has impressive tensile strength,
meaning it can be stretched a lot before it snaps.
Scientists have been trying for decades to
decode exactly what gives the silk both strength
and elasticity, but so far they have found only
clues.
Tasks
Derive algorithms based on the behavioral
pattern and social structures of ants and
bees.

Develop software utilizing algorithms

derived.
Concluding Remarks
Behavioral patterns and social structures of
humble ants and bees can show engineers
and computer scientists about optimization
problems (OP) abound in real life.

Efficient methods in solving the OP would

yield financial savings to power companies.
