Sealing Seepex Pumps
The Challenge
Seepex GmbH was founded in 1972 in Bottrop
Germany as a manufacturer of progressive cavity
pumps. Currently they have manufacturing in Germany,
The United States and China. They are represented in
over 50 countries around the world. Their pumps are
used to move high viscosity fluids in the food,
wastewater, refining, papermaking, and wood
processing industries. These pumps can be difficult to
seal due to the nature of the fluid (viscous and abrasive).
Limited installation space in these types of pumps
combined with the limited workspace challenge seal
designers and maintenance personnel. Making designs

while providing reliable service and ease of installation
continues to challenge industry.

The Chesterton Solution

Chesterton engineers have developed a series of seal
designs which fit Seepex positive displacement pump
models. The 155, 255 and 280 cartridge seal designs use
a “bell” shaped glands (See figure 1 and 2) which are
clamped between the bearing frame and the stuffing box to
house the mechanical seal. They are designed to pilot the
stuffing box bore to center the seal. The 491 seal uses a
custom designed “bell” gland provided by Seepex (See
figure 3) to house the stationary seal face. The 491 is
used primarily in chemical service. A 440/777 component
seal can also be used on these pumps using a special
adapter with a special gland. Typically these seals will use
TC/TC, SSC/SSC or CER/CER seal faces to resist
abrasion and perform best in high viscosity fluids.
