Machining Science

Sir
When we cut cheese using steel knife, you have mentioned that there would almost be
no wear in the knife.
1- Do we have wear in microns or nano levels?

2- When we cut cheese using steel knife, you have mentioned that there would almost
be no wear in the knife.
Consider a cheese chunk of infinite length and height of, say, 2m. Say, we have
started cutting it length-wise from one end (say x=0) at y = 1m with a constant high
cutting speed. Now, by the time we reach the other end (i.e. x= infinity), at any instant of
time, do we see it getting worn out significantly? Do we see it breaking away at any
point of time?

3- If YES, If what exactly is causing that wear? Is it the amount of stress being offered
by the material being cut rather than the material itself?

Thank you

Sir

1- Keeping the depth of cut and feed constant, when we machine a work piece at low
cutting speed, is power consumption high or low with respect to high cutting speed
scenario?
If high,  is it because of high magnitude of cutting force? or is it high due to the fact that
we need to spend more electrical energy to keep the machine tool running as it needs
more time to cut required amount of material than it needs in case of high cutting speed
scenario? i.e. is the specific energy high here?
2- Say the cutting tool is just rubbing over the work piece surface. It is mentioned that
power consumption is high here. What is the reason for such high power consumption?

Thank you

Sir

In Lecture 13, we have discussed extensively about the flank wear.

1- Is flank wear significant in practical machining operations even though we generally

provide flank angle?
2- If yes, we must be purposefully sacrificing flank angle. True?

Thank you

Manufacturing Processes - Casting and Joining

Hi,

I have a question about what is happening in this video at 00:10:44 -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Gh24aiFFVw#t=644s.

Why are not gases extracted from cavity.

Thanks!
