NICOL GOVERNANCE AND BUSINESS ETHICS

BSAIS 3A PROF. CHRISTIAN TAN

ASSESSMENT TASK 6

1. Describe Saul’s ethical dilemma.

Saul is facing a terrible ethical dilemma which is to report his Brother Dr. Robert
Smith’s Medicare fraud and/or wrongdoings to the authorities or not. He is having a hard
time since if he didn’t reported it and Medicaid found out his brother might lose his license
as well as his license too and on the other hand he love his brother and his brother has
sacrificed his career as a heart surgeon and does a lot of good for the community and for
their family.

2. Why would Medicare fraud be a white-collar crime?

Medicaid fraud is considered a white collar crime because it is health care fraud.
White collar crime refers to those offenses that are designed to produce financial gain using
some form of deception. This type of crime is usually committed by people in the business
world who, as a result of their job position, are able to gain access to large amounts of other
people’s money. Furthermore, white collar crime is a non-violent crime involving
fraudulent activities.

3. How should Saul approach the situation?

It is in Saul’s decision to act ethically since acting ethically in business means more
than just obeying laws and regulations. If he acts ethically and approaches the situation
rightfully then he is being honest, doing no harm to others, competing fairly, and declining
to put your own interests which are something that Dr. Robert Smith did not do. He must
do the right thing because if did not choose what is right the situation that he is facing
might become more hard for him to handle and he might make it worse.
