All these things still held true for us, but by the time
we were going for our fourth child, Niall had taken
on a big new job, and we were already planning the
mammoth task of a house extension. Our focus lay
with organising our living arrangements outside the
family home, at the cheapest price possible, and with
minimum disruption to the kids’ lives. As if that could
ever happen!
The bills kept mounting. I wasn’t working and hadn’t
been for the past five years. I was a stay-at-home Mum,
despite our financial situation. Things were tight, very
tight, so the last thing I was going to be in the midst of
it all was a pregnant diva. Going to the doctor on my
own was no big deal; Niall proving himself in his job
and guaranteeing us all an income was.
When I came home from that September scan
(home was a shell at that stage, with building work
having commenced in July), I found Niall talking to
the foreman. My husband is a very good looking guy
(this is my prerogative, so run with it—I did marry
the guy after all), and though my girlfriends would
often ask me whether there were any “Diet Coke ad”
guys working on site, none of the builders could hold
a candle to him. Not that I didn’t fully check out the
prospect first! That day in early September, however,
standing in the upheaval of our home in his impeccable
dark navy suit and crisp white shirt, with his skin still
dark from the summer, I thought he really looked too
young to be so grown up and in charge. As he saw me
approach, he walked towards me and led me away from
the commotion he had been overseeing. He helped me
duck under a ladder [bad luck] and step over a beam
