Installation and Assembly Guide

Planning

A few things to consider:

 The Plate Shelf should be mounted in an area which offers enough room to play
safely on your Cross, because the Plate Shelf hides the Mounting Bar which
secures the Cross to the wall.

 The Pedestal can go wherever you would like to use it as an accent piece or to
display your favorite objet d’art.

 We strongly suggest that you assemble and re-assemble the Cross/Pedestal on a

soft surface such as carpet or towel. This will help protect the wood from being
scratched.

 Standing on a step stool or chair will facilitate lining up the hinges to insert the
quick release pins when the Cross is being attached to the Mounting Bar. The
hinges are on top – from below, it is very difficult to see whether or not they are
lined up properly to allow the quick release pins to slide through. Standing on a
step stool allows you to look down and clearly see and align the hinges.

 Please note that the threaded rod that holds the Pedestal together has a piece of
orange tape tied near the tip. It is there to help you see it and avoid injury.

 The mounting system allows some flexibility both horizontally and vertically. As
long as the Mounting Bar spans two studs, it can be positioned right or left
horizontally to optimize Cross and/or Plate Shelf placement. Likewise, you can
secure the Mounting Bar higher or lower on the wall, which in turn determines
the angle that the Cross will lean against the wall.

 The Criss-Cross is made from natural wood, and seasonal changes in

temperature and humidity may effect tightness of fit during re-assembly. If
you’re having trouble fitting the collars on, we’ve found that re-arranging the legs
helps.

Initial Installation

There are three tasks to accomplish:

1. Attach the Threaded Steel Rod to the Top Collar.

2. Attach the Plastic Guide Tube to the Bottom Collar.

3. Attach the Mounting Bar to the wall.

First, detach the two metal plates from the Bottom Collar by unscrewing the ¼” nut
from the machine screw. Keep the ¼” nut and 2 washers for later use. The machine
screw is for shipping purposes only.

Attach the Threaded Steel Rod to the Top Collar

Squeeze a small bead of wood glue on the wood block as pictured. Line up the 4
screws with the pre-drilled holes on the inside of the Top Collar and tighten the
screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Some of the glue may “squeeze out” - just mop
up the excess with a paper towel.

Attach the Plastic Guide Tube to the Bottom Collar

Insert the threaded end of the Plastic Guide Tube into the ¾” hole on the inside of
the Bottom Collar and screw in until snug. Do not over-tighten – the tube merely
facilitates guiding the Threaded Steel Rod through the Bottom Collar when you re-
assemble the Pedestal (as described later).

Attaching the Mounting Bar to the Wall

Securing the Mounting Bar to the wall is the most important of your installation
tasks. For safety reasons, it is critical that the two 4 inch screws be firmly anchored
in wall studs.

Tools needed: stud finder, electric drill with 1/8” and 3/16” bits, tape measure, and
pencil.

1. Locate two studs in the wall where you plan to put the Mounting Bar. Use a “stud
finder” as pictured, or other method of your choosing – but be sure to anchor the
Mounting Bar into wall studs for safety reasons.

2. At each stud, make a pencil mark on the wall 77 inches above the floor (or 79
inches if you want the cross perfectly vertical). This will mark the bottom of the
Mounting Bar.

3. Drill a 1/8” pilot hole 3/4“ above the pencil mark into each stud. Make the holes
2-1/2” deep – if the pilot holes aren’t deep enough, the screws will likely break
off or bend.

4. Hold the Mounting Bar slightly above the 1/8” pilot holes and align it horizontally.
Just be sure that the screw holes are at least a 2” from the ends of the Mounting
Bar. The hinges on the Mounting Bar go on the top edge with the “knuckles” of
the hinge facing out, into the room. Carefully place pencil marks on the
Mounting Bar that align with the holes in the wall.

5. Drill 3/16” holes through the Mounting Bar using the marks you made in step 4.

6. Secure the Mounting Bar to the wall using the 4” screws provided. Use a power
drill with a #3 Phillips driver bit if possible—the screws are large and long.

7. Place the Plate Shelf over the Mounting Bar – there are grooves on the underside
of the shelf to receive the hinge “knuckles”. Decorate to your taste.

8. Now put the tools away – you won’t need them anymore. The Criss-Cross truly
does convert from Pedestal to Cross and back again in just a few minutes –
without tools.

St. Andrew’s Cross Assembly (from Pedestal)

1. Turn the Pedestal upside down.

2. Unscrew the nut holding the metal plates to the bottom collar. Set the nut and
washer aside (you’ll use the washer in step 9). Remove the two plates and set
them on the floor.
3. Carefully lift the Bottom Collar off the Pedestal column. The four sides of the
column are the four legs of the St. Andrew’s Cross—they are loose so take care
that they don’t fall. SAFETY NOTE: We strongly recommend that you do not
remove the orange flag tied to threaded rod – the rod is thin and difficult to see.
Set the Bottom Collar aside.
4. Remove the four legs and set them on the floor near the plates. Remove the bag
of hardware and dump the contents near the plates. Set the Top Collar aside.
5. Insert the carriage bolts through the plate with eight square holes. Place a
magazine (or something flat and thin) over the bolt heads and set the plate on
the floor, flipping it so the threaded ends of the bolts are sticking up. Leave the
magazine in place – it will keep carpet threads from catching between the bolt
heads and the plates.

6. Place the legs of the Cross over the bolts as shown. Be sure to place the top legs
(the ones with hinges) at the same end of the cross with the knuckles of the
hinges sticking up.

7. Place the plate with all round holes over the bolts. It is designed to be a tight fit
– but don’t force it. You’ll find that wiggling the legs brings the bolts into
alignment with the holes.
8. Place a washer (including the one from step 2) and wing nut on each bolt.
LOOSELY finger tighten the wing nuts.
9. Lift the Plate Shelf from the Mounting Bar and set it aside.
10. Lift the cross and lean it into the Mounting Bar so that the hinges on the Cross
legs line up with the hinges on the Mounting Bar. Stand on a chair and slide the
quick release pins through the hinges to firmly secure the Cross to the Mounting
Bar. It’s a little tricky, but the safety factor makes this worth the effort. Again,
wiggling the Cross legs is a good technique – if you tightened the wing nuts too
much in step 9, just loosen them a little.

11. Tighten the wings nuts snug.

Pedestal Re-assembly (from St. Andrew’s Cross)

1. Pull the quick release pins from the hinges.

2. Lower the Cross to the floor, wing nuts facing up.
3. Unscrew the wing nuts, remove them and the washers. Lift off the metal plate
and 4 Cross legs. Remove the carriage bolts from the other metal plate. Place
all the hardware except one washer and the ¼” nut in the cloth bag.
4. Place the Top Collar upside down on the floor (and again, be careful of the
threaded rod). Insert the 4 Cross legs into the Top Collar with the “points” up
and the “long side” of each leg into the corners of the collar, as shown.

5. Drop the cloth bag down the center of the Pedestal column.
6. Place the Bottom Collar over the Pedestal column using the plastic tube to guide
the threaded steel rod through the Bottom Collar. Slide the two steel plates over
the extended rod. Place the washer over the rod and screw the ¼” nut on finger
tight.

7. Gently roll the Pedestal upright. Place where desired.
