Chapter 2.

Mutual Inductance Between Two Coaxial Hexagons

2.1 DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM

In this example, the mutual inductance between two parallel coaxial hexagons with sides of length s =
100 cm are computed. The two hexagons are separated by d = 25 cm, as shown in Figure 2.1. The
mutual impedance between two parallel coaxial hexagons can be computed theoretically by the
following formula [1]
s d d2 d4 (1)
M (d , s) 0.012s ln 0.15152 0.3954 0.1160 2 0.052 4
d s s s

where the mutual inductance is measured in H. Substituting s = 100 cm and d = 25 cm into Eq. (1),
the theoretical mutual inductance is

2.2 COMPUTATION METHODS

Considering two circuits as shown in Figure 2.2, the voltage V1 in Circuit 1 and V2 in Circuit 2 can be
expressed by the following equations:

V1 Z 11 I 1 Z 12 I 2 (3)
V2 Z 21 I 1 Z 22 I 2 (4)
where I1 and I2 are the currents in the Circuits 1 and 2, respectively. Z11 and Z22 represent the self
impedances of Circuits 1 and 2, respectively, Z12 and Z21 are the mutual impedances between the two
circuits. They can be written as
