Individually We Are A Drop,

Together We Are An Ocean.
As a former assistant coach, and a future coach, the coaching philosophy I have
always gone by is “Individually we are a drop, Together we are an ocean.”
(Akutagawa) This means that each and every player’s individual contribution and
effort is a piece to the success and power of the whole team; and that we will only have
and maintain that power if we work together to achieve it. The reason I am passionate
about coaching is because I inspire to teach important life values to children through my
love and dedication to sports. A few of these important values that I incorporate into my
coaching are hard work, respect, perseverance, motivation, teamwork, and many more
critical traits of life. What I love about athletics is that we get to instill these values
through sports, while working on physical fitness, skill development, social skills,
sportsmanship and competitiveness.

After reflecting on my experiences, my coaching style would be to make every

player's experience as fun and rewarding as possible, while incorporating those
important values of everyday life into practice and our program. I would make sure to
maintain a very safe, positive, and accepting environment. Whether the player is the
star player, or someone that is not that skilled, they will feel comfortable with their
abilities and know they’re valuable to the team. Referring back to our philosophy;
“Individually we are a drop, Together we are an ocean.” I will also make sure our
players, staff, families, and community know the goals of our program, and feel
comfortable to freely express their feelings to me, and feel proud of the program that we
have.

As you can see from our philosophy and coaching style, it is a main focus that
every one of our players acknowledge and improve individually, and as a team, on the 4
“C’s” of the NYS Athletic Framework Mission Statement: Competence, Character,
Civility, and Citizenship. Our program is designed to develop the player’s skills, rules
and knowledge of the game, and overall physical fitness. One of the main aspects our
program focuses on is building the character of our players. This includes responsibility,
dedication, loyalty, hard work, trustworthiness, and self-control. We will demand civility
from our players. This means everyone will show respect, sportsmanship, teamwork,
and fairness to all coaches, teammates, opponents, referees, parents, teachers,
classmates, siblings, and everyone else they come in contact with. The final “C” is
Citizenship and this is a very important part of our program. This means every player
will be a role model on the field, in the classroom, in their home, and in the community.
We will instill these vital aspects of life into our players each and every day and not
tolerate any sort of judgement or bullying in our program.

In conclusion, our goal is to win games, but it is not our main goal. Our main goal
is to make sure each and every player has fun and becomes a better athlete, teammate,
and all around person. We also develop our skills in athletics, social interaction, and
most importantly lifetime values that make a respectable person. We want to work as a
team and always have everyone's back because “Individually we are a Drop,
Together we are an Ocean”
