Heat Exhaustion & Stroke

The Alerts are provided to all Drilling and Workover Operations Foremen and Liaisonmen so that we all learn from the
experiences of others. The knowledge of this incident could prevent similar ones from happening in the future.
Saudi Aramco policy requires the information in this Alert to be communicated to all crew members and documented on
morning reports.

Heat exhaustion/stroke related incidents are common in the summer time.


12 incidents occurred this year, here are some examples:

1. (MTC) IP fainted and collapsed at the same level

2. (FAI) Floorman fell down from the platform due to heat exhaustion

3. (FAI) Roustabout had symptoms of heavy sweating, rapid pulse, cold/clammy skin, and
mild muscle cramps

4. (FAI) Roustabout was observed feeling exhausted and escorted to medic

5. (FAI) IP escorted to medic suffering from heat exhaustion while working on crane

These incidents could have been more severe under different circumstances.

To prevent future heat-related incidents:

Avoid unnecessary work activities conducted under direct sunlight. If necessary,


the minimum precautions from the heat index tables in the second page must be in
place. In addition:

 Rig management must be able to identify over heat related symptoms and
take action such as resting & drinking water immediately.

 Frequent Rest periods for every working session.

 Cool shaded areas to be utilized for resting periods.

 Stress the importance of frequent water intake.
