Reflection

For my senior project, we were to create a letter of intent stating that I would be shadowing

Paul Johnson of Midwest Medical Services in Watertown South Dakota. I then shadowed Midwest

Medical Services for my senior project over 4 different days. Throughout those 4 days, Paul Johnson

and I spent most of our time going through the certain parts of business within 5 hour days. We’d go

over things such as inventory, how businesses rent out and sell equipment, insurance, delivery, and

sanitary cleaning. Throughout those 4 days we shadowed for 40 hours in which I used a good portion

of that time thinking critically about the certain parts of business. I spent most of the time throughout

that time period writing my shadowing journal and writing reflections.

Some of the challenges that I faced shadowing or working through the senior project would be

juggling all of my other extracurricular activities. We had to have certain things completed during

certain time frames. Then, throw COVID-19 into that mix, which kept us from doing a lot

throughout the year. Things that were adjusted from this was being able to go into homes in which the

products were delivered to. Another challenge that I faced was being able to learn how the delivery

process works. I overcame these challenges by planning out my week and doing research ahead of time.

Through this experience, I gained valuable business knowledge with this experience and have

learned many things that will help me in my future work. I learned to manage my time in a much more

productive way. I also gained the confidence needed to possibly pursue a career in business someday.

I’ve also built relationships with Paul Johnson and his staff at Midwest Medical. They would be more

than willing to help me in the future if any questions arise with my own business. I plan to use this

experience in the future to better understand what skills I will need and better understand the working

industry. I want to give a special thanks to Mr. Rudebusch, Paul Johnson, Ms. Gusso and the

highschool staff at Castlewood Highschool for supporting and guiding me through this experience.
