Two friends, Jez and the narrator, were stranded in the Australian Outback after their car broke down. They had little water and began to worry about being rescued as the day grew hotter. The narrator tried to stay calm until they noticed a sign for a town 20 km away. Though the walk was long and tiring in the heat, with their water supply dwindling, the narrator insisted they make the journey. Luckily, a kind man stopped and gave them a ride, fixing their car and providing water before they continued their trip.

see. I tried to start the car again, but the engine died. ‘That’s it’, said Jez. ‘What do we do now?’ He was starting to panic. ‘Just wait’, I replied calmly. ‘And if nobody comes? It’s hot out here and we only have one bottle of water.’ ‘Look’, I replied angrily, ‘I don’t know, OK? Let’s just hope someone comes along .’ That’s when we noticed the small sign a few hundred metres down the road. We ran over to it and read: ‘William’s Creek 20 km.’. We could walk there …,’ I thought. The road was long and tiring. The sun was hot and the water was running out. The forces were leaving me, and I had to continue. Suddenly a car stopped next to me. The man in the car was very kind. He took us back and fixed the car, because he turned out to be a master. He also gave us ten bottles of water. We took the dusty road again.
