DETERMINANTS
To solve
2x + 3y +2 = 0 (a)
3x + 4y +6 = 0 (b)
We could first find the value of x by
eliminating y.
So,
8x + 12y + 8 = 0
9x + 12y +18 =0
By subtraction, we get x + 10 = 0, so x = -10
By substituting back in either equation,
we obtain y = 6
In just the same way, if:
a1x + b1y + d1 = 0 (a)
a2x + b2y + d2 = 0 (b)
So the equations become:
a1b2x + b1b2y + b2d1 = 0
a2b1x + b1b2y + b1d2 = 0
By subtracting, we get:
(a1b2 - a2b1)x + b2d1 - b1d2 = 0
(a1b2 - a2b1)x = b1d2 - b2d1
b1d 2  b2 d1
x
a1b2  a2b1
We have a shorthand notation for a1b2 - a2b1:
a1 b1
a1b2  a2b1 
a2 b2
Evaluate the following determinants
If we eliminate x from the original equations and find
an expresion for y, we obtain:

 a1d 2  a2 d1 
y   
 a1b2  a2b1 
So, b1d 2  b2 d1
x
a1b2  a2b1

 a1d 2  a2 d1 
y   
 a1b2  a2b1 

2. 2x + 3y - 14 = 0 ; 3x - 2y + 5 = 0

3. 4x - 3y + 20 =0 ; 3x + 2y - 2 =0
