1. Why traditional Christmas tree is swapped by the new Christmas tree? (1)
For the health and safety purpose.
2. State two things that you have learned about the new Christmas tree. (2)
It has LED lights around it and plays piped Christmas carols.
3. Explain how the writer presents his and others views about the new Christmas tree. You
should support your answer with close reference to the passage, including brief
quotations. (10)
The writer has used sequence of three for example,’ no sharp needles, no wieldy
branches and no chance of it falling over’. It attracts the reader’s attention and enhances
the effect of writer’s point of view towards Christmas tree in the reader’s mind.
Writer has also used facts and figures. For example, ‘£14,000 structure’. It makes the
reader think about the Christmas tree structure more real.
Writer has also used simile. For example, ‘like a great big green traffic cone’. It helps to
visualize the picture of the Christmas tree in the sight of reader.
Writer has also narrated some of the views of other people, for example, ‘Edward
Stevens said…’ It gives the reader more idea of Christmas tree.
Writer has also used puns, for example, ‘something that has just landed from out of
space’. This creates a negative image of Christmas tree in reader’s mind.
4. How is the start and the end of the event announced/notified at La Tomatina? (1)
A rocket is fired to mark the start and the end of the event.
6. How does the writer describes what he sees and feels? You should support your answer
with close reference to the passage, including brief quotations. (10)
The writer has used rhetorical questions, for example, ‘Were we meant to bring our own
tomatoes?’ it gives an idea to the reader about the curiosity of writer for the fiesta.
The writer has also used personification, for example, ‘Dumper trucks crawling towards
us’. It defines the mass of crowd to the reader at La Tomatina.
The writer uses simile, for example, ‘swaying like one living organism’. It also defines the
rush of the crowd to the reader.
The writer also uses alliteration to make the context more attractive to the reader.
Example: Frenetic, frantic and little frightening.

7. Compare how the writers of Source One and Source Two convey their ideas and
perspectives about the different houses people live in. Support your answer with
examples from both texts. (15)
Both the writers of source 1 and 2 have started the passage abruptly. Both passages are
3rd person narrative. Both sources are about a festival; Christmas and La Tomatina. Both
of the passages have numerical figures,”£14,000” and “150,000 rotten tomatoes”. Both
of the passage use negative tone, as in the first passage No one likes The Christmas tree
and in the second The writer says that La Tomatina is a waste of food.
in the first passage The writer Describes The Christmas tree through others opinions an in the
second Passage the writer express his opinion to describe the festival of Tomatoes. In the first
passage the writer uses simple and short sentences while in the second passage the writer uses
complex and compound sentences. First passage is an informative article to attract elderly
people and the second passage is a travel loge based on writer’s opinion to attract tourist and
young-ones. In passage 2 pattern of three has been used, ”franetic,frantic and a little
frightening”, in passage 1 it can not be seen. In passage 2 personification has been used, “the
dumper trucks were crawling”, in passage 1 there are no personification.
