There are – There is

Hello guys! Welcome to the grammar section!

In this video, we are going to learn about the use of there is/there
are in different forms. Let’s look at the picture and identify the
vocabulary:

1. Closet
2. Posters
3. Pillow
4. Lamp
5. Bed
6. Balls
7. Toy car

Now, we are going to describe this picture:

-There is a lamp on the bedside table.

-There is a pillow on the bed.

-There is a toy car on the floor.

-There are posters on the wall.

-There are balls on the floor.


As you notice, we use.

There is for singular and There are for plural in affirmative sentences.
Just remember that it’s possible to say:

-There is a book on the bed. Or There’s a book on the bed.

Look at the picture again. Can you see a cell phone or a chair? No, right
so in this bedroom:

-There isn’t a cell phone on the bed.


-There isn’t a chair in the bedroom.

Can you see shoes or books in this picture? No, right so:

-There aren’t shoes on the floor.


-There aren’t books on the bed.

As you notice, we use:

There isn’t for singular.


There aren’t for plural to make negative sentences.
