EDUCATIONAL ANALYTICAL SUMMARY

Title of the text How Languages Die

Summary of the text:

We can appreciate how the author takes English as a killer language since he wants to defend
the French language, The objective of the article is to highlight the ways that have encouraged
the author to cover the issue of the death of language whereby three questions are posed. the
first How do languages die and why?, the second the endangerment of the lingua franca
function of a language matter in the same way as that of its vernacular function (to all its
spglobalization and finallyWhat form of globalization is the most lethal to marginalized or
minority languages (in the sense of “langues minorées” in French)?. we can see how a language
is endangered and how the loss of it occurs, in which the author says that it is a matter of will. it
is also appreciated how the author says that language has life all this can be attributed to the
issue of globalization This is because the use of English extended to many countries where
English had never arrived and thanks to globalization it has become a recognized language and
with great importance.

Key words Globalization, idioms, economy

Problem addressed by the text:

The first way a language can die is when the people who speak it cease to exist. This is language
death by population loss, and it has been very common over the last 500 years. Population loss
can occur either by disease or by murder. When the Europeans invaded the Americas, Australia,
and the Caribbean they on the one hand murdered the native inhabitants in order to seize their
lands and on the other hand unknowingly brought with them lethal epidemic diseases like
smallpox to which the indigenous people had no immunity. As whole speech communities died,
due to diseases and warfare, numberless languages died with them.

Objectives of the text:

The goal is to highlight the ways to think more about the complexity of the subject matter of
language death.
the author is focused in three important questions:
1. How do languages die and why?,
2. Does the endangerment of the lingua ?
3. What form of globalization is the most lethal to marginalized or minority? And also
whether any language needs protection against the
spread of another, under what particular conditions, and how.
Main thesis of the author:

A language dies when nobody speaks it any more. However, there are different ways languages
die. In this regard, three types of language death can be identified: population loss, forced shift,
and voluntary shift. One must, however, recognize that the divisions between them are not
always clear. Many language deaths involve some combination of all three. Besides, there is a
considerable grey area between forced and voluntary shift. The distinction between what is
forced and what is voluntary is problematic, but the terms are useful as idealized ends of a
continuum.

Arguments presented by the author:

The arguments presented by the author for the development of his text is a constructive
criticism for the different people who speak on this subject, as its development exposes us the
reasons why it is necessary or because it has become necessary the English language which and
the main one because of the need for change, the author is very impartial in what he exposes to
us he speaks of how the human being by his necessity to advance the any type of circumstance
introduces a second language to his speech he shows us the different points of view both of
those who are against that the language is killing his native language but in equal way he shows
us of how people demand the English language as a language of learning for the improvement
of these in his own benefit.

explains the reasons why this change is being generated because thanks to globalization has
generated the need for change but also shows us how the English language is not to end up
killing the other languages because people who adopt this language do not leave behind their
natural language.

Conclusions of the text:

The author gives us the main reasons why English is being considered the language of death,
but we must find what the author says because he does it in a neutral way shows us why the
need to speak the English language, since it has been by own determination of the people who
adopted this as their second language. Having found that it has been more of a necessity for the
progress and growth of his personal life, work and so on.

The main reason why this change has been generated is globalization and the need to do
business to generate economic growth both personal and for companies or countries, in the
personal sense we can speak of the need to grow professionally in the company or workplace
because for different circumstances it asks to know the language and speaks English.

You can see the text that the author speaks that the English language has spread much faster
than any other language of the European continent but it must be that only 3% of the world's
languages are located there, we also have to observe that for a certain group of people it is
easier to learn the English language than any other language such as French or Mandarin
because for this reason Eastern countries adopt the English language as a business language
without forgetting their mother tongue even so the natives of these different countries are
those who ask or demand the English language as a language of learning as mentioned above to
generate both personal and professional growth.

To finish we can  not say that the English language wants to finish with the other languages if
not that it is simply a tool of help to carry out different activity if it were on the contrary as
exposed by the author at the moment of the exports of the different products of English
speaking countries would be delivered net in this language but as we can observe in different
situations the products sold of these countries to other countries of non English speaking are
delivered in the language way of the country of destiny.

Findings:

- The globalization allow exchange between ancient and modern cultures to develop the
language according to customs and behaviors
- Language is not just related with syntax and sematic, language is also related with the
behavior of an individual, the way to communicate a message to the people
- It is not possible to determine the “birth date ” or “death date” of a language
- Language is modified across the time according to the use of the speakers
- There are a lot of varieties of English dialects around the world ad those has been
spread in different countries becoming an important language on economy and touristic
sector
