the Results in a Classification Scheme

Total Concept I
Have one transparent dome designated for farming + Dome and
cylindrical portion will protect from sandstorms and wind +
Self-adjusting heater that has thermometer to regulate air temp
+ Hydrogenated boron nitride nanotubes + Energy floor/solar +
Habitat will have nitrogen extracted from the atmosphere and
oxygen produced from splitting water molecules. H20 from the
soil Farm dome will have carbon dioxide extracted from the
atmosphere + Dome would be transparent to allow optimal sunlight
+ One main airlock on the entrance to the outer dome + Have a
second non-transparent dome designated for living

Pros:Two areas for the inhabitants to be in if they want sun or

if they want to be in a house like space. The total area on the
surface is minimized. The energy floors encourage the
inhabitants to exercise in order to maintain their energy
supply. Carbon dioxide extraction from the atmosphere may not be
necessary since the CO2 produced by humans will be sufficient
for the plants. Conversely, the O2 produced by the plants would
be sufficient enough for human survival, creating a closed loop
environmental system.
Cons:There is no backup plan in the case the dome or cylinder
were to be breached. It is difficult to set up a taller
structure in an environment that humans can’t live in naturally.
If not built properly, the top layer could collapse on the lower
half. Cylinder ratio has to be optimally designed for a strong
structure and comfortable living space. Water is scarce so it
might be hard to get enough oxygen to live and provide water for
the plants and people.

Total Concept II
Farming will be done in the dome portion on top, with access to
the living spaces down below + Outside dome would be made of
(tougher material) Inside dome would be made of translucent
acrylic or polycarbonate + Self-adjusting heater that has
thermometer to regulate air temp + Hydrogenated boron nitride
nanotubes + Solar Panels with wiper to clear sand + Habitat will
have nitrogen extracted from the atmosphere and oxygen produced
from splitting water molecules.H20 from the soil Farm dome will
have carbon dioxide extracted from the atmosphere + Farming dome
is transparent for sunlight + One main airlock on the entrance
leading down to main living area + Living space would be
underground with farming portion breaking above the surface

Pros:The ground surrounding the lower portion would be a

natural protectant against the Mars elements. This means that
sandstorms would not be an issue. Preparing the lower cylinder
would be as simple as digging a large hole. Acrylic and
polycarbonate are light and would be easy to transport to Mars.
Carbon dioxide extraction from the atmosphere may not be
necessary since the CO2 produced by humans will be sufficient
for the plants. Conversely, the O2 produced by the plants would
be sufficient enough for human survival, creating a closed loop
environmental system.
Cons:Has to withstand the weight of the earth around it in
which if it fails the lower portion may cave in leading to
death. Water is scarce so it might be hard to get enough oxygen
to live and provide water for the plants and people.

Total Concept III

Have one transparent dome designated for farming + outside dome
made of Mars ice + Self-adjusting heater that has thermometer to
regulate air temp + Energy floor/solar panels + Habitat will
have nitrogen extracted from the atmosphere and oxygen produced
from splitting water molecules + Farm dome will have carbon
dioxide extracted from the atmosphere H20 from the soil + Dome
would be transparent to allow optimal sunlight + One main
airlock and a tunnel that connects the two domes and can act as
an airlock + another transparent dome for living quarters
Pros:Having multiple domes can provide a more comfortable
living space. Having the outside dome be made of Mars ice
provides both protection from the elements and protection from
radiation, and since it’s already on Mars it would decrease the
amount of materials we would have to bring. If one of the domes
is breached there is still another dome to survive in. Allows
some light to pass through the dome. Would already be set up
when the astronauts arrive, so they wouldn’t have to worry about
setting up the habitat. Carbon dioxide extraction from the
atmosphere may not be necessary since the CO2 produced by humans
will be sufficient for the plants. Conversely, the O2 produced
by the plants would be sufficient enough for human survival,
creating a closed loop environmental system.
Cons:It might be difficult to connect the two domes together
and have them seal properly. Although the ice allows some light
through it is not fully see-through. Would require a mission to
be sent ahead of time to deliver robots to set up house. Would
take a while to gather enough water to create the ice layer.
Water is scarce so it might be hard to get enough oxygen to live
and provide water for the plants and people.
