MILESTONE 3.1 – REFINED CONCEPT: INITIAL PROTOTYPE

Team Number: Mon-53

1. Copy-and-paste picture(s) of each team member’s refined concept (initial prototype) on the
following pages (1 team member per page)
® Be sure to clearly indicate who each refined concept belongs to
2. Include details on how concept was refined (what feedback was incorporated, what features
are different than previous concept exploration, etc.)

We are asking that you submit your work on both worksheets. It does seem redundant, but there
are valid reasons for this:
• Each team member needs to submit picture(s) of their refined concept with the Milestone
Three Individual Worksheets document so that it can be graded
• Compiling your individual work into this Milestone Three Team Worksheets document
allows you to readily access your team member’s work
o This will be especially helpful when completing the rest of the milestone

This concept is similar to the concept sketch, however I changed how it is attached to the canvas
based on some of my teammate’s comments. Instead of a hook idea I had before, the device now
clamps too the back of the canvas and the clamp on the back is able to move up and down along
the canvas, allowing for more area to be covered. A tread in the device was also implemented so
that the arm support could be moved horizontally, again allowing for more degree of freedom. The
device now has two spherical ends allowing the client to adjust the device on either side using her
none painting hand.

Design allows the client to hold a cushioned gripper to control the movement of thin paint brushes
to create intricate designs. The paint brush is inserted in the tube where there are two knobs on
the side to tighten and loosen the paint brush into place. Once the paint brush is secured in place
by the turning knobs pressing inside the tube, the knob has a flap than can be pushed down to
lock the paint brush in place. The client would hold the rectangular cushion at the top for

comfortable gripping and control over the paint brush. This design can be used if the client is
painting horizontally on the floor or vertically on an easel.

The design was made in a curved shape to allow the client’s hand to rest comfortably. A peer
feedback that was used to refine the design was to remove the back face of the design to allow
easy placement of the hand. 2 slits were embedded into the structure to allow a strap for stabilising
the client’s hand. Along with the usual up-down movement to adjust the height of the platform, a
rotatable joint was added to allow easy and flexible movement in any direction intended. The hole
for the tool was also made smaller to allow a tighter fit leading directly to the position of the hand.
This would also require less effort to clutch the tool.
The solution could be placed anywhere on the floor and allow the client to grip onto any tiny tools
and complete her tasks. Incase the task was to be completed while standing such as a mounted
canvas, the support platform can be detached from the rod and used on its own.

The magnetic bar now can rotate around, but it still needs to have a longer length for reaching all
degrees of freedom. Instead of the Velcro, elastic strap will be used, since the client mentions that
Velcro makes her uncomfortable. Also, the part around her wrist needs to be made of washable
or waterproof material so that it will be easier to clean.

MILESTONE 3.2 – DECISION MATRIX

Team Number: Mon-53

1. As a team, use a decision matrix to aid you in choosing two concepts to proceed with.
® Your concept titles should be descriptive (i.e., “Pencil with Hook” instead of “Design
A”)
Include your team’s Decision Matrix below.
Priority is from 1-5 with 5 being the most prioritized. The

2. The numbers you associate with your criteria (objectives and constraints) will probably be an
estimation at this point, so your top two concepts may not always end up being the top
two scoring from the decision matrix. You should provide justification for your team’s
thought process in choosing the top two concepts. This should include, but is not limited to,
explaining:
® Your choice of decision matrix tool
® Your rationale behind your choice of criteria
® Why you prioritized criteria the way that you did (if ranking and/or weighing them)
® What metrics you used to decide your scoring of concepts within the criteria

Insert your team’s top two concepts below.

Concept 2: Magnetic levitation bar with water-filled cushion

Include your team’s justification below.

Our team chose to use a decision matrix along with priorities assigned to the functions and
objectives stated. This allowed us to weigh the criteria we would like to see, relatively among all 4
of the design solutions. By ranking and calculating the final score, we arrived at 2 solutions that
we ranked highest even outside of the matrix due to the concepts involved.
Keeping in mind the client’s needs, the criteria were chosen such as stabilising the arm and a
durable solution that is comfortable in long time use. We also had to ensure that the paintbrush is
gripped well to allow finer painting. The device must also be portable and not hard to carry or
move, which would otherwise defeat the purpose of a design solution. We wanted to focus on
allowing the client to have stability when painting so she could paint for a longer duration, allowing
her to complete her artwork. With these main objectives in mind, we decided to score stability for
the arm and durability for the solution to be used for a long time as our top priorities.
As for the metrics, we used a scale from 0-3 to rank how each design solution fared against the
criteria put forward.

MILESTONE 3.3 – DESIGN REVIEW

Team Number: Mon-53

Include your feedback from both your peers and the science students below.

Include feedback from peers in this row.

Design 1: (Moveable arm support attached to canvas):
• Find a better way to clip the device onto the canvas, maybe by attaching it to both sides.
• Find a way to allow the device to move up and down a canvas.
• Being able to lock arm stabilizer in place.
Design 2: (Magnetic levitation bar with water-filled cushion)
• Instead of Velcro, design a stretchable strap that fits her hand and brushes.
• Increase the length of the bar
• Prevent the rail from moving freely while painting
• Use a smaller base that can attach to the table
Include feedback from science students in this row.
Design 1 (Moveable arm support attached to canvas):
• Unique design
• Make sure that the handle can rotate to reach all the degrees of freedom
• Potentially add another handle to be placed on another part of the canvas to reach more
degrees of freedom
• Not to limit the location of the handle so it can be used on different parts of the canvas
Design 2:(Magnetic levitation bar with water-filled cushion)
• Good idea
• Ensure that the part around the wrist is waterproof or washable
• Make sure the rail at the top can reach all positions of the canvas
