Narrative

The supplies for this project mostly relate to the construction of students’ final chapbooks. I will need a stapler and printer

paper for handouts, guided notes, and exit tickets throughout the unit, and students will keep their materials in plastic folders for the

duration of the process as well. They will need one laptop per group as they work on the layout for their chapbooks—this layout will

be created using Microsoft Word. It would be ideal for students to have access to a printer in the classroom itself, since I anticipate

they will be printing out their final products at different times, and wrangling people to a computer lab while I’m conferencing or

giving mini lessons seems disruptive. Many groups will choose to use cardstock for their covers, rather than regular printer paper.

Then they will use scissors and X-Acto Knives to cut their papers, punch holes with awls, fold together using rulers, and sew the

binding using needles and linen thread. I expect many students will put the visual art in the Microsoft Word layouts, but others will

want to glue art into their chapbooks after printing. Binder clips are necessary to keep pages together during this process. Because I

plan on asking colleagues to give “guest lectures,” I want to thank them with cards students can sign as well as gift cards to Starbucks,

which seem to be universally appreciated. I think that many of the necessary costs for this project can be dealt with using

crowdfunding sites like Donors Choose or Adopt A Classroom, since these platforms allow teachers to explain the reasoning behind

wanting certain supplies. I hope that by elaborating on my project and showing donors how much students will benefit from having

access to certain materials, I would be able to catch people’s attention and convince them to chip in a bit.
