Slide 1: Good Afternoon, I am Roberto Garcia Jr., reporting for the last topic on how to write chapter 5.

I
will be discussing about the Evaluation of Thesis/ Dissertation.

Slide 2: A thesis or dissertation must be defended by a jury of examiners and then forwarded to proper
authority for approval. Therefore, certain criteria exist to test a thesis or dissertation. A thesis or
dissertation manuscript must contain essential and pertinent information regarding the study, and it
should be based on facts. Basically, each of the universities or colleges have their own rules and
regulation when it comes to evaluating the students’ thesis or dissertation.

Slide 3: So, I would be discussing to you the general criteria wherein most of the schools are using the
criteria to be shown by further slides.

Slide 4: First thing to be evaluated is the subject and the problems.

Slide 5: First is (The subject must be significant, timely, and of current issue). It states that the subject to
be studied is of current issue and would be useless if the issue or a problem happens in the 1970s, so
the subject should be timely.

Next is (The subject must be clearly delimited but big enough for making valid generalizations).
Your study should not be too general or big but is clearly delimited so that you could be able to create
valid generalizations.

So here is an example of a finished or complete thesis or dissertation. The study is entitled,

“Assessment of Performance of Monitoring and Evaluation Systems at Caritas Torit, in South Sudan”,
and the researcher is Abalang James Alex. Also, the study has delimited to Caritas Torit Eastern
Equatoria State projects, South Sudan. Monitoring and evaluation of projects are often important
ingredients of project progress. It increases transparency, in which the stakeholders can track the
implementation progress, a mechanism to desired input, and a chance to respond to knowledge gained
through subsequent preparation and implementation.

Slide 6: Next is (The title should be appropriate for the subject). Yes, the title should contain and give a
hint to the reader that what particular topic is being studied on the title by the researcher.

Next is (The sub problems must be specific, clear, and unequivocal).

So, going back to the given thesis as example, the title is appropriate for the subject in
which the overall objective of the study is to assess the Performance of Monitoring and Evaluation
systems at Caritas Torit in South Sudan. Flashed on the screen are the Research objectives and the
Research Questions that arise from the study.

Slide 7: The next criteria being evaluated by the panel is the Design of the Study. Normally the design of
the study falls on Chapter 3.

Slide 8: First is (The research methodology must be appropriate). Meaning, what particular methodology
are you going to use. Generally, we have the quantitative, qualitative, or mixed method research
methodology. And of course, you have to clear it out on the design of the study what particular
quantitative or qualitative form of study you will use whether descriptive, correlational, etc.

Next is (The design should be clear and in accordance with the scientific method of the
research). Generally, you have to discuss it clearly and completely.
For the given thesis, the research design for the study used a descriptive survey design
wherein, it allows in-depth analysis and understanding of a particular phenomenon as it exists in the
present condition. Moreover, the researcher used questionnaires, interview guides, and focus group
discussions on the data collection.

Slide 9: Next is (The report must be prepared carefully following acceptable format and mechanics).

Next is (The documentations must be adequate and properly done).

Here is the complete table of contents of the thesis given.

Slide 10: So, the next one to be evaluated by the panel is the Data or Findings in the study. This will
summarize all the answers from your research problem, so it is the results from the data gathering.

Slide 11: So, first is (The data must be adequate, valid, and reliable). For the researcher to provide the
correct findings.

Next is (The data must be analyzed carefully and correctly treated statistically). Next is (The data must
be interpreted correctly and adequately). After you analyze the data, you have to make interpretations
of what is the implication of the results.

For the given thesis on the slide, the chapter presented data analysis and interpretation of the
research findings.

Slide 12: So, the next thing that the panel will evaluate is the Conclusions or Generalizations.

Slide 13: So, first is (The conclusions must be based upon the findings). Next is (The conclusion must
answer the specific questions raised at the beginning of the investigation). Your conclusion should
answer all the research problems you have set on your Chapter 1.

Based on the given thesis, conclusions have been made upon the findings of the study, that only
a small number of Caritas Torit employees were well versed with the Monitoring and Evaluation tools
and methods.

Slide 14: Next is (The conclusion must be logical and valid outcomes of the study). The answers must be
credible, reliable, and valid.

Next is (The conclusion must be stated concisely and clearly and limited only to the subject of
the study). If you are making a conclusion. It should be straightforward, direct to the point

Here is the continuation of the conclusion made based upon the findings of the study.

Slide 15: So, after the conclusions have been evaluated, Recommendations part is the last criteria that
the panel will evaluate in the dissertation.

Slide 16: So, first is (The recommendations should be based upon the findings and conclusions). Of
course, the recommendations must be based on the findings and conclusions, you cannot recommend
something that is not part of your study.

So next is, (The recommendations must be feasible, practical, and attainable)

So, based on the research findings and drawn conclusions, the given thesis has made
recommendations to further improve the study made. Here are the recommendations made.

Slide 17: For the next criteria is, (The recommendations should be action-oriented). The study should
recommend action to remedy unfavorable condition discovered.

Last is (Are the recommendations limited only to the subject of the study but recommend
further research on the same subject?) You can recommend to future researchers that they could be
able to conduct other studies relative to your study in their particular locality.

Flashed on the slide is the recommendations for further research.

Slide 18: So, those were the criteria that will be evaluated by the panel to the thesis/ dissertation.
Moreover, for the rest of the slide, I am showing you an example of a dissertation evaluation form from
the Institute for Clinical Social Work. First on the criteria for the evaluation form is the Quality of
Conceptual Framework.

Slide 19: Next is the Quality of Research Design and Process

Slide 20: Next is the Quality of Writing and also the Quality of Oral Presentation.

Slide 21: On this slide, it shows the space for the overall score for the evaluation of a thesis. Moreover, it
shows the interpretation of the grades obtained.

Slide 22: Lastly, are the recommendations for the researchers and the signature of the panel member or
the faculty evaluated the dissertation or thesis. That is all for my report and for the report of the last
group about How to Write Chapter 5. Thank you for listening.
