Trapped in a lift - 20210414

One blazing day, my brother, Tom, and I were trudging home after
school. We could not wait to go home and have a popsicle to cool down. As we
reached the lift lobby, we pressed the lift button.

“Ding!” the lift door slid open. As we stepped inside, I pressed the button
for the 6th floor instantly.

While the lift was ascending, I noticed that the lights on the buttons began
flickering. With frightening suddenness, all the lights went off. It was pitch
dark. I had a phobia of the dark, now my greatest fear had come true! I was
trapped in a lift without any light! I was stunned and petrified. But I
remembered what my teacher said when trapped in a lift. I groped about blindly
in the lift. As it was pitch dark, I pressed almost all the buttons on the panel.

Finally, I pressed the correct button. Ring ring ring! An alarm rang shrilly.
I kept on jamming on the same button until my hands were clammy with
perspiration. After what seemed like an eternity to me, I finally heard a muffled
voice call, “Don't worry. I’m a lift technician. I’m going to pry open the door.
Please stand back.” A few minutes later, the door was pried open. I thanked the
lift technician profusely and offered him a generous reward. He declined the
reward and helped me out.

After that, I found out that Tom had already dozed off. I woke him up and
we went home by stairs.

I told my mom the entire incident. She gave me a compliment and gave
me my favorite fruit-flavored popsicle.

From this incident, I was no longer afraid of the dark. I learned what to
do if there is a lift breakdown like this.
