Section K: Comprehension – Passage A (4 marks)

Read passages A and B carefully and answer questions 51 to 53.

Passage A

In 1876,
i2 the Dewey Decimal System was invented by Melville Dewey. He was an
American librarian and educator. This Decimal system is used to organize resources in
most school libraries. The Dewy Decimal System organizes information into 10 main
subject areas using number from 000-900.

Each book is then given a ‘Call Number’. This

acts like the book’s address on the shelves.
The first row is the number in the Dewey
Decimal system and the second row are the
first three letters of the author’s surname. The
books are arranged on the shelves in number
order, according to their topic. This allows
people to look for books in the library quickly
and easily.

Section L: Comprehension – Passage B (6 marks)

Passage B

Matilda is a young girl who is often ill-treated and neglected by her father and
mother. She learnt to take care of herself at a very young age as no one would take
care of her.

Every day after her parents had gone off to work, she would go to the library to
read during her free time. She loves reading very much. She loves imagining about the
characters she has read in the books as it helps her forget about her sad
circumstances. By four years old, she had read all the children storybooks in the library
and she was ready to read the adult books.

The librarian saw her coming to the library to read every day. She told Matilda
that she could borrow books with a library card. The library card would allow her to
borrow the books she wanted and she would only need to go to the library to borrow
and return books. Matilda was delighted. Now, she can read books in her own home.
