Giving advice
Your friend is discussing his film script with you. Complete your conversation using
words from the box and the words in brackets. Add negatives when necessary.

be too hard on yourself include killer aliens in the script

get carried away with too many ideas keep trying
help me write it write a science fiction story

Charlie: I can’t think of a good idea for my film script.

You: (1) Why don’t you help me to write it (why don’t you)? Those are
always exciting to watch.
Charlie: That’s a good idea. Maybe I could write something about space
explorers?
You: Yeah! (2) You ought to write a science fiction story (ought to)!
Charlie: Definitely. I could have a cool space battle! Maybe I’ll write about a
bunch of different alien species that all want to rule the galaxy! I could
have a few subplots happening too—maybe even a romance.
You: That all sounds interesting, but (3) you had not better get carried away
with too many ideas (had better). It can be confusing for the viewer.
Charlie: Right, of course. I just got excited thinking about all the possibilities.
Hey, (4) I should include killer aliens in the script (should)! You have
such great advice!
You: That’s a nice offer, but I don’t think I’m very good at writing. I tried to
write a script once, and it was a disaster.
Charlie: (5)You must be too hard on yourself (must). It’s hard to write a great
script. (6) You have to keep trying (have to), if you want to get better.
You: OK then! Let’s give it a shot!

Reporting statements
Your teacher has asked you to interview your family members about their interest in
travelling to space. Complete the summary using your notes.

Mom: You should talk to your uncle because he knows a few astronauts.
Uncle: Astronauts often have health problems after they return to earth.
Sister: I think about space travel every single day.
Grandma: I never want to leave earth.
Grandpa: I’m reading a book and I’m too busy to answer your questions.
Dad: My feelings on this matter have changed over the years.

Space tourism
I’m fascinated by the possibility of space tourism, but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea.
I talked to my family members to get their opinions on the matter. First, I talked to my
sister. She said (1)that she thought about space travel every single day . She can’t wait
for it to become a reality! My grandmother, on the other hand, is not excited about the
prospect at all. She told me (2) that she never wanted to leave earth. When I asked my
mom for her opinion, she said
(3) that I should ask my uncle because he knows a few astronauts. So I called my uncle
and asked him for his thoughts. He told me (4)that astronauts often had health problems
after they returned to earth. Apparently, being in space takes a heavy toll on the body.
That makes space tourism a lot less appealing to me.
Next, I asked my dad what he thought about travelling to distant planets and galaxies.
He explained (5) that his feelings on this matter had changed over the years. When he
was younger, he absolutely loved the idea of jetting off into space! But now, he thinks he
would be too frightened to ever try it. Finally, I tried asking my grandfather for his
opinion, but he told me (6) that he was reading a book and he was too busy to answer
my questions.

Reporting questions
You met your favourite author at a book fair. You are writing an email to your friend
about the experience. Complete the email by reporting the questions in the box.

Are you working on any new novels? How did you get started as a writer?
Do you have any advice for young writers? What is your name?
Do you want to be a writer? Where do you get your ideas?

Hi Becky
You’ll never believe it! Today, I met my favourite science fiction writer at the book
fair! I had so many questions for her. First, I wanted to know more about her
background, so (1) I asked that how did her get started as a writer. She told me she
had been writing since she was a teenager. Then (2) I asked that where did her get
her ideas, because I always wonder how writers come up with their imaginative
stories. She explained that she reads a lot of tech magazines and tries to imagine how
the latest technologies will develop in the future.
She saw me holding a copy of her most recent novel and offered to sign it for me.
(3) I asked what is her name because she wanted to personalize the inscription. While
she was signing the book, (4) . She told me she was, but she wasn’t sure when she
would be finished. I guess I’ll just have to keep an eye out for it.
Before I left, (5)She smiled and (6). I told her that I did, and she told me to just keep
working at it and never give up!
I hope I can write as well as her one day. Will you read my story when I finish
writing it? Maybe you can give me some comments on how to improve?
Talk soon,
