A review on Tobacco use among medical students in Odisha

Medical students have a fundamental task to carry out in the battle against tobacco. As
individual, they can help instruct the population. Patients anticipate information, help, and
direction from their essential consideration doctor on a few wellbeing related issues.
Doctors.additionally play an essential role in helping patients to stop smoking. Medical
students are primary target for tobacco-prevention programs. Medical students' has
knowledge of smoking-related conditions, but substance use remains relatively common
between them.
G.S. Ramakrishna, P. Sankara Sarma, K.R. Thankappan has surveyed 3 medical college of
Odisha having sample size of 1189 students and the age range was 17-27 and median was 21.
Bivariate and multivariate analysis has donr for mrn students only because female tobacco
users are very less in numbers. Bivariate analysis was done use chi-square tests of
significance. The questionnaire prepared by them has covering every aspects and data were
analysed by using SPSS for windows version 11.0. Out of 1189 students they found 117
smokers, 94 smokeless users and 75 students who use both medium. Total 286 students are
ever use smoker and out of them only 21 feamale students ever use Tobacco. And currently
104 students are smoking and only 3 out of them are female. Half of the students spent less
than Rs1500 per month for living expenses. More than 50% of students spend Rs 1-50 per
week on tobacco. More thean 50% of the current user got satisfaction out of tobacco use.
Third students are more likely to be current users of tobacco. Two third students know govt.
has banned smoking in public places and only 13% has heared about FCTC. Most Students
use substances whose family members use tobacco.
