Assignment #1 Research Paper- (Individual Task 35%) March 08, 2021

Miss James, a new grade one teacher, was advised by her grade supervisor that the group of
students she will be teaching are weak in their early literacy skills. The weaknesses in skills
include limited print awareness, to limited knowledge of letters, poor listening skills, among
others. The grade supervisor has asked Miss James to prepare a presentation related to the
students’ weaknesses which will be presented to the parents of these children.

a) State THREE early literacy skills that need to be developed in the grade one students.
Ensure to:
i. Define each early literacy skill
ii. Explain one importance of each skill to literacy development
iii. Definitions and explanations must use relevant researched literature

(3 x 2 marks = 6 marks)

b) Using relevant literature, discuss how deficits in TWO other early literacy skills can
impact students’ ability to acquire literacy. Ensure to provide an example to reflect the
impact. (NB: do not discuss skills researched in part (a) above).

c) Miss James plans to review several early literacy programmes/initiatives so that she can
utilize the ideas and principles to help her to plan meaningful lessons for her students.
She has come to you for suggestion.
i. Explain to Miss James, the main literacy components of TWO Early literacy
programmes/initiatives (6 marks)
ii. In a step-by-step manner, present an activity that Miss James can utilize to
improve any one of the early literacy. (11 marks)

There are various instructional approaches that foster the development of literacy and these can

be adopted through the teaching/learning situation in the classrooms.

a) Using three (3) academic references outline and explain the components of TWO of the

approaches that can foster the development of literacy. Choose the approaches from the

list below:

- Basal Approach,
- Literature Based Approach,
- Whole Language Approach,
- Language Experience Approach,
- Balanced Literacy Approach,
- Computer Aided/Technology Based Approach,
- Phonetic Approach or Eclectic Approach.                           (6 marks)

b) Develop a lesson plan using the 5 E Model based on ONE of the approaches that you

researched.  Show how this approach that you have chosen can be utilized to enhance

literacy development in a grade of your choice.                                               (10 marks)
