Topic 1. Meeting Other Medical Professionals


Situation 1
Student A.
You are a nurse. You have been working for Hope Hospital for 5 years in Emergency
Department. You meet a new hospital employee. Make a short introduction conversation with
him/her. For example, you can:
1. Greet him/her.
2. Introduce yourself to him/her.
3. Welcome him/her to the hospital.
4. Ask him/her whether it is his/her first day working at the hospital.
5. Ask him/her where he/she comes from.
6. Other small talk topics
Student B.
You are a physiotherapist. It’s your second day working at Hope hospital in Physiotherapy
department. You come from another town. You meet a hospital employee you greet you and
introduce himself/herself to you. Respond to the introduction and questions.

Situation 2
Student A.
You are a nurse. You have been working at the Critical Care Department of Siloam Hospital,
Jakarta. You have been working there for 7 years.
Now, you are at an international Health Care conference in New York. During coffee break
you meet a new friend. Make a short introduction conversation with him/her, include small
talks.
Student B.
You are a doctor. You come from Sydney, Australia. You work at Sydney General Hospital
in Sydney, Australia. You have been working there for 6 years. You are in the Cardiac Care
Department.
Now you are at an international Health Care conference in New York. During coffee break,
you meet a new friend. Make a short introduction conversation with him/her.
Topic 2. Meeting Your Patient
Situation 1
Student A.
It’s morning time. You are a nurse. You come for the morning shift. You introduce yourself
to a patient in Bed 1. Tell him/her you will be taking care of him/her until 15.00. Make short
conversation with the patient and also his/her family member who is accompanying him/her
in the ward. For example, you can:
• check his/her ID, ask how he/she is feeling, perform assessment or examination if the
patient complains of any pain, ask if he/she needs help from you and tell him/her to
press the bell if he/she needs your help.

Student B.
It’s morning time. You are a patient and your father/mother is with you now. Your date of
birth is: July 2, 2002. The morning nurse comes to start his/her shift. The nurse introduces
himself/herself to you. Tell the nurse you couldn’t sleep well last night because of back pain.

Situation 2
Student A.
It’s afternoon time. You are a nurse. You come for the afternoon shift. You introduce
yourself to a patient in Bed 2 who is with his/her father/mother now. Tell him/her you will be
taking care of him/her until evening, you will check on him/her in 1 hour. Make short
conversation with the patient. For example, you can:
• check his/her ID, ask how he/she is feeling, perform assessment or examination if the
patient complains of any pain, ask if he/she needs help from you and tell him/her to press
the bell if he/she needs your help.
Student B.
It’s afternoon time. You are a patient and your father/mother is now with you. Your date of
birth is: July 8, 2001. The afternoon nurse comes to start his/her shift. The nurse introduces
himself/herself to you. Tell the nurse you couldn’t sleep well last night because of headache.
Topic 3. Explaining Process
Situation 1
Student A.
It’s morning time. You are a nurse. You are visiting a patient who will be discharged this
afternoon. Greet the patient, check his/her ID and tell the patient that he/she will be going
home this afternoon because his/her condition is now getting better. However, your patient
need to be able to do effective breathing technique. Tell the patient that you are going to
teach him/her how to do effective breathing technique.

Student B.
It’s morning time. You are a patient. Your date of birth is February 16, 2001. You will be
discharged this afternoon. Your condition is now getting better. The nurse comes to explain
to you how to do effective breathing technique independently when you are at home.

Situation 2
Student A.
It’s afternoon time. You are a nurse. You are visiting a patient who will be discharged this
afternoon. Greet the patient, check his/her ID and tell the patient that he/she will be going
home this evening, but he/she needs to keep his/her hands hygine. Tell the patient that you
are going to teach him/her how to do handwashing.
Student B.
It’s afternoon time. You are a patient. Your date of birth is March 24, 2000. You will be
discharged this evening. Your condition is getting better. The nurse comes to explain to you
how to do handwashing when you are at home.
Topic 4. Bed-side Handover
Situation
Information about Patient
Situation Ms. Rachel Smith, 38 years old, asthma patient
Background Admitted via the emergency department early this morning around
05:30
Assessment Vital signs:
1. temperature is 38°C
2. pulse rate is 100 beats per minute
3. respiration rate is 30 breaths per minute
4. blood pressure is 110/80.
Recommendation • She has intravenous antibiotics every 8 hours and the next one
should be given at 14:00.
• She is also on a nebulizer, which is also due at 15:00. She needs pre
and post peak expiratory flow rates to be done.
• She needs to go for a repeat X-ray some-time today, around 16:00.
Student A
You are a nurse who will end your shift. You introduce a new nurse (student B) to your patient
and perform bedside handover. Don’t forget to confirm understanding of the incoming nurse
every time you give information.
Student B
You are a nurse who will start your shift. You are introduced by your colleague who will end
his/her shift to the patient. Both of you perform bedside handover. Don’t forget to check and
recheck/confirm the information you get (check against the charts and/or the patient).

Topik 5. Poster Presentation


Student A
You need to present your poster about the system in human body and related diseases. After
that, you need to answer the question given by your audience.

Student B
You will listen to your friend’s presentation. Ask a question related to the presentation once
he/she finishes presenting the poster.
