Lesson 9
ICT and Conventional Learning Materials to enhance teaching learning

Let’s begin!
Activity 1: What’s in your mind.
• Learning materials is also known as instructional learning material that is used for
teaching a course. Learning materials is helpful to students in reaching their goals,
because it will serve as their weapon to face the challenges in the present and a
ladder to success.

How far have we gone!

Activity 2: Discussion
1. As a future teacher, what do you think is the importance of conventional learning
materials in the teaching learning process?
• As a future teacher, conventional learning materials in the teaching learning
process is important in a way that it will help the student to understand what
your trying to teach in an easy way. And also, it will benefit me as a teacher
to save time and my students to be independent in learning by
understanding the given materials all by there self for them to prepared in
college. And also, through learning materials students teaching will become
easy and efficient.
2. If you were to choose a certain learning material to be utilized in your future class,
what it well be and why?
• Choosing learning materials to be utilized in my future class is hard for me
because even if I choose the best if my students can’t cope up with it still
it’s not effective. Because according to Gardner, students have different
level of intelligence. No learning materials is effective if it will not
appropriately used and appropriately fit to students. But as a future teacher,
the learning materials I would used is video presentation because I believed
that this material would help me to explain well the topics to my student and
also through this the student can learn more and think outside the box.
Activity 3: Interview

Activity 2: Discussion
1. In your own words differentiate synchronous and asynchronous learning.
• For me, the difference of synchronous and asynchronous learning are
synchronous learning refers to a learning event in which a group of
participants is engaged in learning at the same time. For instance, in a
corporate training scenario, this type of learning occurs when there is in-
person training or live webinars where the employees or customers can
participate at the same time. Whereas, in asynchronous learning the
instructor, the learner, and other participants are not engaged in the learning
process at the same time. There is no real-time interaction with other
people. An example of this method in corporate training is creating online
content with pre-recorded videos or publishing an on-demand online exam.

Activity 3: Reflection
1. How important is distance learning in teaching-learning process nowadays? What
are your coping mechanism in dealing with the problems encounter during the
distance learning.

We are in a transition time where technology is growing to be so commonplace

that it would be almost ridiculous to consider an educational model that would not include
some form of distance education. Distance learning is important in our current situation
because it provides the opportunity to widen intellectual horizons, as well as it stresses
individuality of learning and flexibility in both the time and place of study. The benefits of
distance learning are clear. However, there are still varying perceptions of distance
learning which exist within our society today.

Of all of the differing definitions of distance education, they all include the
separation of the student from the teacher and other students. However, with the use of
programs such as zoom and free video conferencing tools such as Google meet the
distance is being bridged. It seems that as these types of tools become more and more
common, as even the personal computer has become, that distance education will not
have the same negative perceptions to overcome.

As I have taken this course, my own perception of distance learning has changed.
I saw how distance learning can be conducted in a way that you do not compare it to a
face-to-face course, but you simply learn from the activity of the distance learning
platform. So, how do I now continue this perception and spread it past own beliefs? I
believe it will start with developing all distance learning coursework with the theory that
guides it in mind. Simonson et. Al. (2012) tell us that Holmberg suggested that “distance
education has been characterized by a trial-and-error approach with little consideration
being given to a theoretical basis for decision making”. If we begin to base our decisions
for design on sound theory then we are working from a strong foundation and this is where
we should begin.

This course has also inspired me to consider online teaching as a possible future
endeavor. I have such a strong passion for teaching and have always aspired to be a
teacher. I can now see myself doing this not only in a classroom but also in an online
format. With the knowledge I gained from this course and the experience of thinking
through developing an online class with our activity I feel I could be successful. Being a
positive factor in the continuous improvement of distance education starts with being a
part of great distance education.
