Ans: Minerals are important for our body in the following ways.
Minerals are required for the formation of healthy bones, blood and teeth. Examples of minerals
include calcium, iron, potassium and iodine. Minerals such as calcium are required for the formation
of bones and iron helps in the formation of blood.

5. Why do we need calcium?

Ans: We need calcium for the formation of our bones.

body parts in their rightful positions with minimal stress.

7. What is food preservation?

Ans: Food preservation is the process of treating and handling food in such a way as to stop or slow down
spoilage while maintaining nutritional value, texture and flavour.

III. Long Answer Questions:

1. Briefly explain the different food groups.

Ans: Different foods have different nutrients. The main nutrients that are present in foods are
carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Besides these, foods also contain roughage and
water. A food group is a collection of foods that share similar nutrients. These food groups have been
categorized based on the kind of work they do for the body.

2. Why is a balanced diet important? Explain.

Ans: A balanced diet provides important vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to keep the body and

3. Explain any three methods of food preservation.

Ans: Methods of preservations are:

-Refrigeration- keeping food items such as cooked food, fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator can
save them from getting spoiled. Thus, the food stays fresh longer.

-Drying- is the oldest method of food preservation. Drying removes the water content from food items
and helps them remain edible for longer. Food items such as bananas, fish and prawns can be
preserved with this method.

-Pickling- is the process in which oils and spices are used to preserve food. Foods like mango and
lime can be mixed with oil and spices to make pickles.

-Deep freezing- some food items can be kept in the freezer so that they do not rot. Meat, fish and peas
can be preserved by this method.

-Canning and bottling- in this method, food such as jams and sauces are kept in airtight cans and
bottles. This helps to keep the food fresh.

4. Why does our body need proper rest, healthy food and regular exercise?

Ans: Our body needs proper rest for proper functioning. We should sleep about 6 to 8 hours in a day.
If our body does not get proper sleep and rest we will feel tired and our organs will not function
properly, for these we can also fall ill.

Taking healthy food will help us to grow and develop our body. If we take too much or too little of
any particular nutrient, it can weaken the immune system to fight against the diseases. So it is
important for us to take healthy food for our own good.

We must also do exercise on a regular basis. It will help us to maintain the right posture and our body
will remain active and energized. Exercise makes our muscles and joints strong.
