Disability Scavenger Hunt

1. New legislation concerning disabilities: The Disability Act of 2019 Prohibits the
discrimination of an individual with disabilities from being denied service from community
resources by their insurance provider. Individuals must be offered community services before
they are placed in an institution.
2. Current event concerning individuals with disabilities: Deputies were warned that they were
called to aide a 25-year-old male with autism that had spiraled into a mental health crisis. The
altercation escalated and the man and two officers ended up on the ground and the man’s hearing
aid fell out, the man ended up being shot at close range with the possibility of becoming
paralyzed. Officers were warned beforehand that the individual was hard of hearing and had
autism.
3. Something from Pinterest related to disabilities: There were many posts related to teaching
children about disabilities and how to talk to students regarding what it can feel like when they
are treated different.

    a) An expression of gratitude: The family was frustrated by the lack of assistance they got
when wanting to travel to America but decided they could create a blog speaking on behalf of
individuals with disabilities and giving tips of where to go, best resources, supplies to bring
depending on how severe the disability might be.
    b) A frustration: The family decided they wanted to travel to America for the first time with
their child that was confined to a wheelchair and wanted to have the same experience any other
family would have if they were any other family.
5. Blog from the perspective of a sibling of a person with a disability (read through and find)
    a) An expression of gratitude: Nedra was able to see moments of joy for her brother who had
cerebral palsy and was non-verbal but was always happy to be outside and play with Nedra.
    b) A frustration: Nedra didn’t get to interact with her brother the same way other siblings
would. She could try and fight with him all she wanted but he couldn’t verbalize it the same way
back.

    a) An expression of gratitude: The mom is more patient and recognizes how she might not
know the whole story behind other families and their struggles because she knows that her
family has their own struggles.
    b) A frustration: Families with autism can’t go to the same restaurants as families without
disabilities. And the understanding the rest of the world has of living with disabilities is a lot
smaller and limited to what they have seen.
7. Blog from the perspective of a teacher working with students with disabilities (read through
and find)
     a) New curriculum or tips/advice: The teacher understands that being a special education
teacher can be very hard and take a toll on not only yourself but if you don’t take care of yourself
it can impact the quality of education students get. She made it simple being take care of
yourself, it helps you, and gives the students a quality education.
8. Something you can get for free if you have a disability: You are able to get a free lifetime pass
to the national parks in the US. There are also scholarships for those with disabilities in order to
get a higher education.
9. An organization that serves pwd that you did not know about and what they do: The American
Council of the Blind helps support individuals become more independent and work towards
being on their own. As well as increase their quality of life.

10. An organization that helps pwd find employment and how they help: State Vocational
rehabilitation allows for individuals with disabilities to get in help in acquiring jobs as well as
keeping their jobs. The jobs people get ate based off of their interests and skill level allowing for
individuals to enjoy their job.
