Conditions of Application:

Acceptance onto the Cambridge CELTA course is not guaranteed. Applicants must satisfactorily complete the ‘Language
Awareness and Teaching Ideas Tasks’ and the ‘Free Writing Task’ in this application form and pass a
face-to-face/telephone/skype/zoom interview to be accepted. Candidates must be able to demonstrate that their level of
English, both spoken and written, is suitable for the demands of the course (C1+/C2 or IELTS 7.5+ equivalent). Your level of
English will be tested at interview. The decision of the centre is final.

I100% attendance is expected. Owing to the practical and experiential nature of the course there is little chance of making
up days missed. Any exceptions to this are made by the Main Course Tutor on a case-by-case basis.

No refunds will be given should you withdraw from the course once it has started for any reason. Refunds before the course
begins will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Pre-Interview Tasks

Section ONE: Language Tasks

2. Meaning
A. Grammar
How would you explain to a student the difference in meaning between these pairs of sentences / words? Please
explain this in sufficient detail.
Example: a) When he arrived, the party had started.
c) When he arrived, the party started.
In a) the party started before he arrived. In b) the party started after he arrived.

3. Tenses
The following sentences contain errors in the use of the tenses. These are common errors made by students. Identify
the error, correct it, identify the correct tense and give a brief explanation.
Example: I am liking singing.
Correction: I like singing OR I like to sing.
Explanation: We use the present simple for facts. Also, we use the gerund or the infinitive with ‘to’ after certain verbs
e.g. like/love/ enjoy/ hate etc.

4. Clarifying Meaning
How would you convey the meaning of the follow words to a group of language students. IMPORTANT! Do NOT give
a dictionary definition. E.g. Smile – I would show an emoji of a happy face.

5. Language clarification
1. You are teaching a group of learners at pre-intermediate level the words much and many. How could you clarify
the difference between the two? Think about how you can make the meaning clear, trying to avoid
over-complicated language.

2. Imagine that you have to teach some vocabulary associated with ‘transport’ (e.g. bus, bus stop, ticket, etc) to a
group of elementary learners.
a) How would you teach these words and other ones related to them?
b) How would you check that the students had understood?
