Teacher: Good morning, students. In our science class today, Sarah will explain how a broken leg is treated. Sarah, are you ready to
begin?
Sarah: Yes, Miss Davis. I … um … I decided to describe how a broken leg is treated because I broke my leg last summer while I
was skateboarding. First of all, when someone breaks a bone, the important thing is not to move that part of the person’s
body. Moving the broken bone will hurt the person and it can make the injury worse. So when I fell and broke my leg, I
didn’t move until I was taken to hospital by ambulance. When I arrived at the hospital, I was first examined by a doctor.
Then I was sent to do an X-ray of the broken bone. An X-ray is a photograph of your bones. This photograph shows the
doctor exactly where the bone is broken and how serious it is.
So the doctor looked at my X-ray, and then he put the broken bone in place. After that, a cast was prepared. A cast is a
special type of bandage. (Actually, it’s made of many bandages.) First the bandages were put in plaster; then they were put
around my leg. In a short time, the bandages became very hard, and I couldn’t move my leg. That’s how the broken bone is
kept in place. The cast is usually left there for one or two months.
In my case, the cast was left on my leg for two months. During that time, the bone got better. New bone cells and blood
vessels were formed, and the broken part of the bone closed up. When the bone was better, a saw was used to cut off the
cast. Yes, a saw! But don’t worry – the saw didn’t cut my skin – just the cast. That’s it.
Teacher: Thank you, Sarah. Has anyone got any questions for Sarah?
