Extract data Manual Data Extraction Guide

Extract data
The Power Advisor Data Extractor lets you extract power data from your power monitoring system.

The power data files that you extract from your power monitoring system can subsequently be
uploaded by your Service Engineer into Power Advisor for analysis.

This guide describes how to obtain and run the Data Extractor, and how to configure the Data
Extractor to extract data from your power monitoring system.

Downloading and unblocking the Data Extractor

To download and unblock the Data Extractor:

1. Download the latest version of the Power Advisor Data Extractor package from the Exchange
Community. (Requires log in.)
2. Extract the contents of the ZIP file to a folder where you have read and write access.

NOTE: The computer does not need to be the PME server, but it must have network access
to the database server.

3. Unblock the executable file:

a. Right-click the executable and then click Properties.
b. Click Unblock.
c. Click OK.

Running the Data Extractor

Run the Power Advisor Data Extractor on the same computer that has the Power Monitoring Expert
SQL Server , or a computer where there is network access to the SQL instance.

NOTE: Running the Data Extractor on the same computer as PME allows it to get the credentials
to the PME databases automatically. This is the only option that allows the Data Extractor to sync
with the PME Cloud Agent.

Prerequisites
To run the Power Advisor Data Extractor, you need:

• Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5

• Microsoft SQL Server connection details to the Power Monitoring Expert databases.

NOTE: If PME is using SQL Server Express, you can only use the Data Extractor locally on the
PME Server.

Manual Data Extraction Guide Extract data

To run the Data Extractor:

1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder where you extracted the Data Extractor ZIP file,
and then run the Power Advisor Data Extractor.

For example:

The Data Extractor opens and displays the PME Databases and Customer Information
tab.

NOTE: Depending on site security, you might need to contact the IT team to run the
executable file.

Configuring the Data Extractor

Configure the Data Extractor by setting the database and your customer information, selecting
sources, and then verifying the measurement mapping file and setting extraction period.

After the extraction configuration settings are defined, you can extract data from the power
monitoring system.

NOTE: To run another data extraction using a different configuration, repeat ALL the following
steps. Skipping a step or providing wrong information can lead to wrong data extraction.

To configure and run the Data Extractor:

1. Click the PME Databases and Customer Information tab.

2. In the PME Databases section:
a. Verify the PME SQL Server address and instance name, and the ION Data, ION Network,
Application Modules, and ION SystemLog database names.
b. Select an Authentication Method for the connection to the SQL Server.

For example:

c. Click Test PME SQL Server Connection and Retrieve Sources to verify that the data
provided is correct.

A status message appears under the button. For example:

d. (Optional) Resolve any connection issues before proceeding.

3. In the Customer Information section:

a. Enter your Customer Name and your Contract ID provided in the confirmation email for
provisioning Power Advisor diagnostics access.
b. Click Extract DataSource ID to retrieve the PME DataSource ID.

For example:

For detailed information on the PME Databases and Customer Information fields, see the
'PME Databases and Customer Information' section in the EcoStruxure Power Advisor User
Guide.
4. In the PME Sources Selection section:
a. Verify that the sources needed are selected for Import.

NOTE: If there are more than 1200 sources, see the 'Extracting large amounts of data'
section in the EcoStruxure Power Advisor User Guide.

b. Verify that LOGINSERTER, QUERYSERVER, and any VIP sources are not selected for
Import.

Any third-party devices or devices not recording energy data should be considered
separately. For more information, see the 'Including custom quantities' section in the
EcoStruxure Power Advisor User Guide.
c. Unless you are extracting data from a large system, do not click Save selection.

5. Go to the Data Extraction tab. In this tab:

a. Click Browse (the folder icon) and make sure MAP_PAL.xml is selected.
b. Verify that you are using the correct Measurement Map File; either the default or the cus-
tom one if there are custom quantities. For details, see the 'Including custom quantities'
section in the EcoStruxure Power Advisor User Guide.

c. Select From Date and To Date for data extraction. The default date range is one month.
Typically, you will not need to change this value.

NOTE: In most cases, one month of data is enough. The date range should not exceed
three months. If the date range is greater than three months, the connection could time
out (throw an exception) interrupting the extraction.

d. Click Cross Map File and Available Sources / Measurements. The list of meas-
urements appears to preview the sources and measurements that will be extracted. For
example:

e. Verify that the list includes the expected sources and measurements.

TIP: Use the Filter Icon (located next to each column name) to check specific devices.

To examine the source/measurement pairs that had data, but not for the date range you
selected, go to the Without Data tab.
f. In Destination Folder, select a target location on your machine for the extracted files.
g. Click History (Alarms and Waveforms are used internally only; they are not related to
the Power Advisor tests.)

7EN42-0207-01 Page 9

h. Click Extract Data.

During extraction you can see the progress in the status bar at the bottom of the
application. The selected data appears in the indicated destination folder.

For detailed information on the Data Extraction fields, see the 'Data Extraction' section in the
EcoStruxure Power Advisor User Guide.

The Data Extractor creates several files you can upload to Power Advisor; it also creates log
files. For more information on these files, see "Files produced by the Data Extractor" on page
10.
6. Close the Data Extractor.

7. Send all the extracted files to your Service Engineer.

Files produced by the Data Extractor

History files
The Data Extractor saves the following history files to the destination folder:

File Description

Contains one or more .HIST files. When a .HIST file is

<customer_name> ! approximately 100MB in size, a new .HIST file is created.
<start_date> ! <end_date>
! History Files.zip The file names include file n of m, where n is the file number and
m is the total number of files.

<customer_name> !
<start_date> ! <end_date> Contains the selected alarm data (.CSV) and waveforms
! Additional Data for (COMTRADE).
Analytics.zip

<customer_name> ! Contains the device names and types with an empty column
Sources for Hierarchy labeled Parent. This is an optional file if the hierarchy will be
Building.xlsx defined in Microsoft Excel.

Log files
The Data Extractor saves the following log files to the same directory as the Power Advisor Data
Extractor executable:

File Description

Extractor.txt A log file of operations done.

Extractor_Error.txt A log file of errors encountered while performing operations.
