Student Reflection (Thoroughly answer all questions)

How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.
This clinical rotation has given him a deeper appreciation to our “new” world for our health care professionals. I am very grateful
we were able to still have a rotation to get firsthand experience during this tough time. It was really a pleasure to help not only the
nurses but the whole team. Being able to help the CNAs, LPNs and the RNs gave me a more defining role for my future
responsibilities. Every shift I learned something new from each of the nurses I was placed with and each time it was solely based
around taking the time extra 2 minutes to provide excellent patient care. In the future I strive to be this patient and intelligent in my
nursing journey, but I truly believe this experience has given me the key points.

How did you specifically meet the course goals for this course? Give detail for each. (Reminder, course goals are listed on the
evaluation here in blue).

Use the nursing process to optimize client health- This goal I used ADPIE to help aid in individualized patient care by establishing
a plan from assessments and implemented these care plans.
Assimilate into the profession of nursing- By working with the team and aiding in any way I could helped me accomplish this goal.
It helped create adequate care for all the patients not only the ones I was assigned too.
Provide patient-centered care- This clinical was solely based on learning how to provide safe and individualized patient care. The
patient is the main goal and the nurses always showed how to revolve the care and needs what was important to them.
Engage in evidence-based practice- During clinical It was evident during these current times it seems there are still some organizing
when it comes to properly handling COVID 19 patients. For example, when the patient (who was rapidly testing negative in the ER)
comes to a floor they are considered PUI and this makes it extremely difficult for the nurses to do an initial assessment and
communicate through the respirators. As students we are not allowed to take care of these patients, but it was visualized the time
being used on donning and doffing PPE.
All goals were met and implemented accordingly.

What is the biggest take away you have from this clinical rotation and how will that affect your future practice?
The biggest take away was communication and patient care. This rotation was run in a team fashion, every morning they updated
the white boards and did a team huddle, this was to form a solid foundation on who needed extra support and what the team
patient load was. Prof. McDaniel was a wonderful teacher as well; she was amazing when it came to showing us proper care and
aided in anything anyone needed. She did her very best to have us in every procedure and learn what we could from each. She was
patient and understanding with our lack of clinical experience and answered all concerns and questions we had and never made me
feel inadequate.
The communication between the staff was healthy and respected, the CNA was well used and voiced to me that the nurses who
lent a hand to help her was more respected by the patients and many of nurses put fourth a valiant effort in doing this. This helped
me realize a good foundation was a big take away in providing excellent care in my future endeavors.

How has this clinical rotation prepared you to take your licensure examination (NCLEX)?
Every nurse I was placed with quizzed me and talked though any question I had for them. They were informational when it came to
procedures, medications, and assessments. My instructor was extremely helpful as well, she would review our patient’s diagnosis,
PMH and medicines with us and broke down the process and reasons why it was chosen to give. She gave us great insight on how to
read the tele strips and gave us NCLEX questions if we ever had a lull.
This will greatly impact my preparedness in passing the NCLEX in the spring.

Faculty Comments/ Student Learning Goals (Goals must be established even if performance is satisfactory. If an item was identified
as N or U, narrative comments are necessary to clarify student performance along with goals to improve performance).

Katelyn performed extremely well this quarter during her 4 th term clinical rotation. She assimilated information into nursing practice
with efficiency and excellence. She worked weekly on solidifying her nursing skills to implement into practice. Weekly, she was
early, prepared and held a high standard for the nursing role. She always respected her patients and communicated to healthcare
staff with valuable insight. She was systematic in her medication administration throughout the course. She can continue to
strengthen her skills in critical thinking skills and MOA of medications and disease processes, which will be learned throughout her
career. She will be a successful nurse. Job well done.
