starting from what many consider to be nothing more than dust

and mud. Dave sees this as yet another chance to show off his
talent. Dave mixes clay with water, throws it on the potter's wheel,
and spins it until a jar emerges. (90)

Critical review of the For a variety of reasons, I adore this book. Hill's rhythmic flow of
book [e.g., comments words so eloquently describes the scenes that the reader can
about the VLS, narrator, readily picture the incidents. Collier's artwork conveys the same
the writing style, etc.] message without the use of words. Something interesting about
(100-150 words)2 this book was how the end of the story begins with another story.
The well-known historical narrative of Dave's childhood. Rather
than finishing Dave's story with the completion of a jar, the author
provides specifics about Dave's life in the form of facts. I learned
more about Dave's personality, emotions, and unforgettable
experiences. The book includes double-page spread and uses free-
verse text. Since Dave was a slave and made pottery to escape the
traumatic parts of slave life, this book resembles a character that
does not live like me. (130)
