INTRODUCTION

Can you imagine yourself going to school just by walking because your car has ran out of gas? Or
taking an exam without eating any meals? How about living a life without light or television? What do
you feel then?
All of us depend on energy. Energy causes everything in the world to happen. It has the power to
change things. It is the ability to do work. The stored energy in the food that we eat allows us to think,
move and play. The energy from the sun allows the plants to make their own food.
At present, most of the modern industries highly depend on energy and the demand for energy is
already increasing. As the study of science advances, energy continues to be a principal concern.

B. DISCUSSION:

UPGRADED MELC: Compare and contrast the different types of energy – light, sound, heat and
electricity by their characteristics.

Find the 10 words listed in the puzzle. The terms may be found vertically, horizontally or diagonally.

Energy is the ability to do work. It comes from the Greek word Energeia meaning “ in or at work”
Everything we do involves energy. Getting up, going to school, and doing chores require energy. In fact,
everything that happens in the universe takes energy.

3
I. Types of energy
A Potential- stored energy. It is the energy possessed by objects due to their position and
composition.
B. kinetic energy-energy in motion. All objects that are moving have kinetic energy.

II.Forms of Energy

Forms of energy Description examples

1.Chemical Energy the potential of a chemical
substance to undergo a chemical
reaction to transform into other
substances. Some examples of
storage media of chemical energy
include batteries, food, and
gasoline.

2.Mechanical Energy the energy that is possessed by an

object due to its motion or due to
its position. Mechanical
energy can be either
kinetic energy (energy of motion)
or
potential energy (stored energy of
position).

3.Radiant energy the energy of electromagnetic

waves. These waves can travel
through space. Electromagnetic
radiation is made up of tiny
particles called photons – think of
them as little packets of energy.

Property of and for the exclusive use of SLU. Reproduction, storing in a retrieval system, distributing, uploading or posting online, or transmitting in any form or by any
means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise of any part of this document, without the prior written permission of SLU, is strictly prohibited.
4
4. Nuclear Energy the energy in the nucleus, or core,
of an atom. Atoms are tiny units
that make up all matter in the
universe, and energy is what holds
the nucleus together. There is a
huge amount of energy in an
atom's dense nucleus.

5.Electrical energy a form of energy resulting from the

flow of electric charge. Energy is
the ability to do work or apply
force to move an object. In the
case of electrical energy, the
force is electrical attraction or
repulsion between charged
particles.

6.SOUND ENERGY the movement of energy through

a substance – such as air or water
– in the form of waves. It is
produced when a force causes an
object or substance to vibrate.

7.LIGHT ENERGY a form of electromagnetic

radiation. Light consists of photons,
which are produced when an
object's atoms heat
up. Light travels in waves and is the
only form of energy visible to the
human eye.

8.HEAT ENERGY the result of the movement of tiny

particles called atoms, molecules
or ions in solids, liquids and
gases. Heat energy can be
transferred from one object to
another. The transfer or flow due to
the difference in temperature
between the two objects is
called heat.

means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise of any part of this document, without the prior written permission of SLU, is strictly prohibited.
5
III. HEAT AS ENERGY TRANSFER

III. ENERGY TRANSFORMATION

Most form of energy can be transformed into other forms. Energy transformation is the change
from one form of energy to another form of energy.

means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise of any part of this document, without the prior written permission of SLU, is strictly prohibited.

Reminder: There is no mini task for LP3 to give you more time to do your big task.

SUMMARY:
Energy is the ability to do work. It has two types. The potential energy-stored energy
and kinetic energy- energy in motion. Energy may exist in different forms. Energy cannot be
created nor destroyed but can be transformed from one form to another. Energy should
always be conserved. The growing population and rise of modern civilization increase the
demand for energy. Conservation and wise use of energy are greatly encouraged.
