CONTENT STANDARDS: Demonstrate understanding of key concepts of geometry of shapes and

sizes, and geometric relationships.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Create models of plane figures and formulate and solve accurately
authentic problems involving sides and angles of a polygon.
MISSION AND IDENTITY STANDARDS: Competence and Creativity

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES:

While learning the lesson, you should be able to:
1. use a compass and a straightedge to bisect line segments and angles
and construct perpendiculars and parallels;
2. Iilustrate a circle and the terms related to it: radius, diameter, chord,
center, arc, central angle, inscribed angle; and
UPGRADED MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY:
3. solve problems involving circles.

ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS AND TERMINOLOGIES:

• Parallel lines – coplanar lines that never meet.
• Perpendicular lines – two coplanar lines that intersect at a single point.
• Compass – it is a drawing tool that can be used to draw circles or arcs, parts of circles.
• Straightedge – it is a tool used for drawing straight lines, or checking their straightness. If it
has equally spaced markings along its length, it is usually called a ruler.
• Circle – It is a collection or set of points that are equidistant from a fixed point called the
center.

B. INTRODUCTION

In this learning packet, you are going learn the discipline of constructing parallel and
perpendicular lines using a compass and a straightedge. More importantly, we will focus on circles
and its parts.
The importance of circles is up to an individuals’ point of view. Of course, the typical display of
circles is aesthetically pleasing to many as they have an extremely high level of symmetry as “shapes”.
Also, circles are useful in applications. For example, from a simple canister cover to as big as an
observatory telescope. These contraptions are circular for a very important reason. But these are just a
few reasons why the circle carries importance to people. As indicated, it is up to you on how you will
perceive it beneficial one way or another.

SUMMARY
It is important to use a compass and a straightedge to construct parallel and
perpendicular lines accurately.
A circle consists of points that are equidistant to the center. It has a radii,
diameters, arcs, and chords.
The radius is the distance of the center from any point on the circle. It is half
the diameter’s length.
A chord is a segment whose endpoints are any two points on the circle. The
diameter is a chord that passes through the center.
An arc is a section of a circle. Depending on its length, an arc can be
classified as a semicircle, a minor arc, or a major arc.
A central angle is an angle whose vertex is the center of the circle. Its sides
are two radii. An inscribed angle, however, is an angle with chords as its sides
and whose vertex is a point on the circle.
