Topic: CIRCLES

No. of Teaching Periods: ( FOR THE TOPIC) 5 Practical- 2

Dates:

Learning Aim: The students will be able to: –

a) Define the term ‘circle’ & explain its concept.
b) Identify the various parts of a circle.
c) Construct a circle of given radius & show its parts.
d) Classify the various regions of a circle.
e) Explain the relation between radius & diameter of a circle.

Practical: 1) To show various parts of a circle using bangles & thread.

2) To create a beautiful design pattern of circles using a compass.

Prerequisite Knowledge (Pre-Concepts/Previous Knowledge, Recall.)

Pupil should have the knowledge of:
1) Types of lines & curves.
2) Types of polygons.
3) Various geometrical shapes/plane figures.
4) Usage of geometrical instruments viz. compass, ruler etc.

Day wise Lesson Plan and Teaching Learning Strategies

Day Sub topic Teaching Learning Strategies
● Before starting the lesson, their
previous knowledge about ‘curves’
will be recalled.
● Introduction to the circle - The
To define a - Curve; types of meaning of circle will be explained
1. curves ( closed, open & by means of various examples
simple). related to it from our daily life viz.
bangle, coin, wheels, clock dial,
sun, moon etc. A circle is a simple
closed curve that does not cross
itself & has no end point. A circle is
a simple closed curve in which all
the points lying on its circular
boundary are at the equal distance
from a fixed point.
● Students will be asked to explore
various examples of circles in their
surroundings.
● The teacher will explain the circle is
To find out various examples the most common geometrical
of circles in our surroundings figure that we observe in our daily
& daily life. life. Knowing a few facts about
circles help in making beautiful
design patterns. We can’t imagine
the world without circles.

● The teacher will show pictures of

circles of different sizes- some big,
some small. She then divides the
whole class into groups & each
group will be distributed cutouts of
circles.
● Fold the given circle into 2 equal
parts & mark the centre with ‘O’.

2.
Definition of circle
Parts of the circle:
1) Diameter of the circle
● Then mark the folded line as ‘A’ &
‘B’ at both the ends. Each half is
called a semi-circle.

Diameter: It is a line segment that

passes through the centre of the
circle with both the end points on
the circle & divides it into two
equal parts.

2) Radius of the circle ● Teacher will ask them to fold again

the circle into 4 equal parts & mark
the folds as A, B, C, D. The line
segments OA, OB, OC & OD are
radii of the circle.
Radius: It is a line segment from
the centre to any point on the
circle. It is always half of the
diameter.

3. 3) Chord of a circle
● Teacher will ask them to fold
the circle from any place
except from centre & mark
‘E’ & ‘F’. The line segment
EF is called chord of the
circle.
Chord: It is a line segment whose
end-points lie on the circle.
● Teacher will ask the students to find
out the length of the circle by
putting a thread around the circle &
measuring the length of the thread
with a ruler. This length is called the
circumference of the circle.
4. 4) Circumference of a Circumference: Length of the boundary
circle of the circle is called its circumference.

● Teacher will ask them to mark two

or three points on the boundary of
the circle as ‘P’, ‘Q’ & ‘R’. PQR is
called an arc of the circle.

5) Arc of a circle Arc: Any part of the circle is called

an arc of the circle.
Relationship between the
radius & diameter of the ● Activity will be conducted live in

Student Activity: Questions on Critical Thinking – HOTS/ MOTS/ LOTS

Solve the given questions based on HOTS:

Find the total number of circles in both the figures:

Motivational Strategy: Achiever of the Day, Diagram guru

Students will be shown a picture of a house with various kinds of things in it. They are
asked to figure out circular things as much as they can. Then they will identify & name
various parts. Reward points for the ‘Achiever of the Day’- the one who figure out
maximum number of circular things in the picture given.

Assessment Techniques: At the end of the topic, students will be assessed by means
of revision test that will be conducted via Google forms & live test.
Homework / Class work: Please attach the assessments/ assignments to be given.
