Parts of a circle

Show the wide-open umbrella to the students.

Name a circle (umbrella) by its center.

Umbrella P is shown.

The runner of the umbrella named P corresponds to

part of a circle which is the center.
Circle is a simple closed shape. It is the set of all
points in a plane that are at a given distance from a
given point, the center; equivalently it is the curved
traced out by a point that moves so that it distance
from a given point is constant. The distance between
any of the points and the centre is called the radius.

A radius is a segment that has one endpoint at the

center and the other endpoint on the circle.

The strings of the umbrella corresponds to radius of a

circle. In the above figure, the string named AP is a
radius of circle P.

A diameter is a chord that passes through the center

of a circle.

The two straight connected strings of the umbrella

corresponds to diameter of a circle. In the figure
above, the strings named APB is a diameter of circle
P.

In Umbrella P, if AP=5cm, what is the measure of AB?

Diameter=2×radius

=2×5cm

=10cm

ST is equal to 10cm.

C. Post-Activity Activity The students will do

Divide the class in 3 groups, analyze the umbrella P the following
and answer the following. activity by group.

1. How many radii are shown?

2. How many diameters are shown?

3. Name all the radii and diameters in the umbrella.

D. a. Why do all radii of a circle have the same length? The students will

questions in the
form of oral
recitation.

IV. EVALUATION

A. On circle P,

1. Name each radius

2. Name each diameter

3. Using a compass, draw a circle whose radius is 3cm.

4. Site situations in daily life where the application of circles is present. Is it useful? Why
or why not?

V. ASSIGNMENT

Research for the angles that can be form from the intersecting radius and diameters of
circle.
