SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10

Performance Standards:

The learners will be able to demonstrate understanding of key concepts of a

circle.

I. Learning Competencies:

1.1 Define and illustrate a circle;

1.2 Identify the parts of a circle;
1.3 Name the parts of a circle

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

A) Define and identify the parts of a circle;
B) Illustrate a circle and terms related to it: center, radius, diameter, chord, secant
and tangent;
C) Name the different parts of a circle through line and segments;
D) Develop the value of determination in acquiring the skill.

B. Lesson Proper

Motivation

Class, before we proceed to our proper discussion

I want you to observe and analyze these pictures.
Activity

Now we will have an activity.

Kindly give the names of the following

pictures that I will present to you in order.

Can you give me one example from the

pictures and tell me the function of it?

Now, class what have you observed? What

are the common among the pictures?

Very good! All of those things that you’ve seen

are all circular in shape. And that’s our lesson for
today, it’s all about “Circles, It’s Related Lines and
Segments”.

Analysis

Class, in your own idea, how can you describe

a circle? Can you give me one description of a circle?

A circle is the set of all points on a plane at a given

distance from a fixed point called center.

The circle is made up of many points

that are the same distance to the
fixed point on the circle.

There is a point at the center of the circle,

this point is called the center. Circle are
A are named through their central point.
The name of the circle is circle A or A.

Next is radius. A radius is a line segment joining

the center of the circle to any point on the circle.

B
If we write B on the other end
of the radius then we have now
A segment AB or AB as the radius
of circle A.

All radii in a circle have equal length. “Radii” is the

plural form of radius.

Another part of circle is diameter. A diameter is a

line segment that passes through the center of the
circle.
B If we write C and D at the endpoints
of the diameter then we have seg-
ment CD or CD as the diameter of
C A D of the circle.

A diameter divides the circle into two equal parts.

Also, the measurement of the diameter is twice the
measurement of the radius.

The next part of a circle is chord. A chord is a

line segment whose endpoints lie on the circle.

B We have segment CE or CE
as an example of a chord.

C A D

Now, I have one question, are all diameters

considered as chords? Yes or No?
Then are all chords considered as diameters?

Apparently, all diameters are considered as

chords but not all chords are considered as diameters
because not all chords passed through the center of
the circle.

Diameters are considered as chords for the reason

that it is also called as the longest chord.

Let’s proceed to the next term related to circle

which is the secant. Secant is a line that intersects
a circle at two distinct points.
B
We have line FE or FE as an
example of secant.
C A D

F E

Then, another part of a circle is the tangent.

A tangent is a line that touches the circle at exactly
one point and that point is called point of tangency.

B We have line B or B as the

tangent of the circle. From the
illustration, what is the point of
C A D tangency? Point B.

F E
Abstraction

What is a circle?
A circle is the set of all points in a plane that are
the same distance from a fixed point called the center
or central point.

How about a radius?

Radius is a line segment joining the center and a
point on the circle.

Can you describe the diameter?

Diameter is a line segment that passes through the
center. It is twice the measurement of the radius.

It is a line segment that the endpoints are on the

circle? Chord

A secant by definition is?

Secant is a line that intersects a circle at two distinct
points.

What part of the circle touches the circle at exactly

one point? Tangent

And that point is called as? Point of Tangency

Application

To further enhance your knowledge, let’s do some

more examples. Look at the figure in the screen and
and read the instructions carefully.
