A Review

When a plane intersects the cone/nappe horizontally perpendicular to the vertical line
or the axis then, the intersection is a circle.

INTRODUCTION

CIRCLE

𝑃
A circle is defined by its center and the radius. The
radius is a line segment from any point on the
circle to the center. Refer to the figure below. Let 𝑐
𝑐 .
be the center, 𝑃 be a point on the circle and 𝑟 be
the length of the line from 𝑐 to 𝑃 called radius.

1
ACTIVITY

𝑄 𝑐.

Given the illustration above, do the following:

1. With a ruler, measure the distance (inch) of point P from the center. What is the
distance?
2. With the same ruler, measure the distance (inch) of point Q from the center. What is
the distance?
3. Choose another point on the curve apart from P and Q, and measure the distance
(inch) of the point from the center.
4. Compare the distances (inch) of the points from the center. Are they equal?
5. Can you find a point in the circle that has different distance (inch) from the center than
the previous points?
6. Complete the statement below.

A circle is a set of ______ whose distance is _______ from the center.

SAQ-1: What is one of the most important things to consider in drawing a circle?
SAQ-2: What are the elements of a circle?
SAQ-3: Give at least three (3) objects that you can see around you that may be
designed and inspired from a circle.

REMEMBER
Key Points
⚫ A circle is defined by its center and the radius.
𝑃
⚫ The radius is the distance from a point on the circle to the
center. 𝑐 .
⚫ Refer to the figure on the right. Let 𝑐 be the center, 𝑃 be a
point on the circle and 𝑟 be the length of the line from 𝑐 to 𝑃
called radius.
2
⚫ A circle is a set of points equidistant to the center.
