Genre
a. Create a list of genres from their favorite music or their experience
b. Pick 1 genre and describe it in more detail
i. What do these songs sound like?
ii. What do these songs tend to be about?
iii. What instruments might you hear?
c. Assign the genre to our class song
i. My assumption at this time is that it will be some type of punk for this
class
d. Discuss what elements we might add to make it fit that genre
e. Allow students time to decide the mood/style of their independent songs, write
choruses

2. Chords/Strumming Patterns
a. Pick chord progression (hooktheory.com)
b. Via hooktheory, find song with similar chord progression in good key
c. Find strumming pattern that fits our chosen genre (DDUUDU, DDUDUDU,
DUDUDUDU but all downstrokes)
d. Practice chord progression with our chosen pattern (slow)
e. Find on Chordify and play through it!
