WHAT IS EASTERN PHILOSOPHY?

Eastern philosophy tries to integrate man into the context of nature by non-dualism, a-dvaita. On
this, Sufism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism all agree. The ideal is harmony of
man and nature. Dao means “way”, ken-do means “way of handling a sword”. Eastern
philosophy is descriptive: it simply presents a set of ideal and applies them to the self and the
world. It is more medicine than sophistry and debate. The eastern guru presents his ideas. You
may then take them or leave them. There is no “proof” of these ideas except for what works. For
example, a truth seeker might to go the buddha, be in awe of the Buddha’s presence, and ask
“how may I learn to achieve this same peace?” And so, Buddhism is born.
If I must describe it in key words, eastern philosophy would be macro, integrated, holistic,
collaborative, unified, generalize, abstract and overarching.

ITS SIGNIFICANCE TO EDUCATION

Eastern philosophy is derived from Islam, Confucianism, Taoism and Mahayana Buddhism.
Eastern countries have their ways of developing and shaping an individual, in terms of skills and
attitudes. Thus, cultures will have different philosophies, which results in different ways of doing
things, especially in education the next generation.
Easterners prefer passive learning. Eastern normally obtained the knowledge directly from their
teachings of religion, such as Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism and Taoism (Chia Mun
Onn, 2009) this is more of a one-way transmission of knowledge, wherever the belief prepared
them with rules and regulations within their life.

The teaching and learning process through Eastern education philosophy stresses major
outcomes from the teachers. It means that teachers are fully responsible for the class
effectiveness by preparing and planning all the activities for their students. For instance, the
students are not trained or required do to anything, but all the materials are given by the teachers.
Students must place a lot of confidence in their teacher/guru. Providing explanation and/or
clarification is the most important part of a learning process.
