2:00 PM - 3:15 PM (HKG) | 3:00 PM - 4:15 PM (JPN) As Japan undergoes multiculturalisation from below, the number of immigrant children and youth has increased by 25% in the last decade. Research has revealed their educational struggles such as high dropout rates in high school. Drawing on the participatory action research (PAR) approach that perceives local actors as having expert knowledge and values collaboration, I have experimented with ways to build partnerships with high school and NPOs to nurture youth leadership, amplify youth voice, and create ibasho (places of comfort and acceptance) for and with immigrant youth. In collaboration with community partners and youth researchers, this presentation examines the opportunities and challenges of PAR projects: 1) creating ibasho through extracurricular activity at a part-time high school in Tokyo; and 2) conducting youth participatory action research (YPAR) on the impact of Covid-19 on the lives of immigrant high school students. We hope to reimagine traditional research and examine how PAR could bring positive changes to communities, including immigrant youths.
