REVIEW “THE CALL OF THE WILD”

Our today’s talk is about a movie named “THE CALL OF THE WILD”, which is an
adaption of the beloved classic novel of the same name. The film is made by Fox - now
renamed 20th Century Studios, and more specifically, by director Chris Sanders. The
film comes off pretty well thanks to the incredible acting of the characters.

The story follows a big-hearted dog called Buck, whose blissful domestic life is turned
upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted
to the exotic wilds of the Yukon. In Yukon, he is adopted by a kind postman, who trains
him to be a mail-delivery dog. On his journey as a rookie on sled team, Buck meets and
makes friend with an aged nomad named John Thornton (played by Harrison Ford).
Fate has led them to an adventure of a lifetime, which helps Buck awaken his own
instincts, and ultimately finds his true place in the world.

Obviously, coming to adaption, it is a little bit different from the original novel. The
director has made some changes to Buck’s image- the protagonist of the film. Buck
appears to be more heroic, more emotional and much more lovable in comparison
with its image in the novel. For example, he has a habit of “shaking hand” with whom he
adores, being willing to share his food, and saving his owner’s life regardless of danger.
That is the reason why the movie’s Buck leaves a deeper impression on the audience.
Using high-tech visual effects to create a lifelike Buck is one of the factors that make the
film successful.

In addition to recreating an adorable Buck, the film also gives the audience a series of
majestic natural sceneries of the freezing North. The image of each stream, waterfall,
forest or land where John and Buck go through makes the audience admire the beauty
of the natural. Apparently, through the famous dog's hardship story, the film brings a
message that inspires people to move to begin their journey.

Accompanying with Buck is a veteran actor, Harrison Ford, as John Thornton. Each
mood and psychological development of this character has been shown very
successfully by the actor. He even has interesting conversations with Buck, although he
has no real co-star to interact with during the recording.

The only pity is that unlike in the novel, Buck's relationship with his master has begun
early, through a couple of accidental meetings. However, it is not until the second half of
the film that the two actually accompany with each other. Therefore, viewers will feel
that the screen-time of John seems a bit less so this character is somewhat ... slightly
inferior to Buck.

Overall, the movie “The call of the wild” is truly a beautiful movie. Thanks to the talent
of director Chris Sanders, along with advanced visual effects and animation technology,
adorable Buck and stunning American nature in the movie promises not to disappoint
the audience. I highly recommend watching this movie, especially those who loves dogs
and discovery.
