SKYE JOSEPH BALLARD AND MEI LI ANNE THISTLETHWAITE

Chapter 1
G r o w l

S itting reluctantly at the docks, desperately waiting for her

familiar acquaintance to return from what seems like an
endless trip, Luna Lightsmith admittedly has thoughts
rushing through her head about whether her mother was right to
send her away for finishing school. Luna had never liked the
dreadful thought of being tamed as she was merely a wild and free
spirit in her town. Although at the time, it was dangerous to be out
alone as a young woman since there were grievous men all over
the dingy alleys and shadowed places where people would never
venture into unless they were looking for trouble. During these
dark times, there were sinister rumours about witchcraft lingering
around the town. Rumours of “deadly” witches that didn’t know
how to precisely control their raw power for the dear sake of oth-
ers.
Every day, Luna would hear the screams of the innocent
victims which would suffer for being mildly suspicious, but she
knew the truth about magik and how powerful it is. No one would
naturally suspect her to be a witch as she inevitably came from a
high-status family from Ireland—a family of great history and
pride in their name. The family had promptly moved to Salem,
Massachusetts only 5 years ago after Luna's beloved uncle had
croaked from smallpox. They moved there to have a fresh start but

little did they know it was a big risk as they could be inadvertently
discovered for the enchanted powers they wielded.
The sacred history of the Lightsmith’s was known by pretty
much everyone who didn’t live under a rock. The family was noto-
rious for the fictional books they had fabricated over their count-
less generations and for their generous hearts helping the poor and
the local homeless. But no one knew about their enchantment. No
one out of their coven or the leaders of the SM (Surreal Magik)
community.
Going on about Luna; she was sat pondering at the docks
eagerly waiting for her best friend to return from her trip away to
see her mamma. She was devastated to tell Baylee that she was
going to be sent away for finishing school in the frigid winter. The
girl had no choice. Her wicked mother and father naively thought
of Luna as being too free-spirited; running in the overgrown fields
of fresh, flowing wheat and splashing her ankle-high beige boots in
the shallow puddles next to the Pond of Whispers.
Hours of waiting patiently went by but to Luna it felt like
days. Luna started to wonder if Baylee was even coming back that
day. She had an very uneasy feeling about why it was taking so
long.

She stood up on the docks and started to pace slowly and

muttered to herself, “It shouldn’t be taking this long. Did some-
thing happen? Is she in danger?” Her voice quivered with fear.
Luna stood still and slowed her breath. She closed her eyes
and tried to focus on her best friend. Luna’s breath kept getting
slower and slower as she slipped into a magical trance.
“It’s dark. I can’t get a feeling of her.” Luna muttered quiet-
ly.
She was startled when she sensed another presence that she
had felt before. This was not Baylee. This was something else.
Luna had never felt this kind of malicious energy before except for
when she was younger. Luna got chills all over her body and was
shivering with fear. She jolted her eyes open and started to breathe
really heavily. Luna drops to the floorboards of the docks, one
hand on her chest and the other on the dock below her to keep her
balanced. She couldn’t control her breathing at this point. She was
too scared. She thought she had lost this dark entity in the past, but
now it has caught up with her again.
Hearing a twig snap from the other side of the pond, she
quickly got up on her feet and looked in the direction it was com-
ing from. Luna tried to look for what could have made that sound.
She saw nothing. Letting out a deep breath, she tried to slow her
breathing.

Out of breath she said, “Okay,” she took a couple more

breaths to hopefully gather herself. “I’m okay. It’s fine. Nothing is
happening. It’s all in my head. Nothing to worry about.”
Luna managed to finally pull herself together. Her breath-
ing was normal, but it was really confusing why she felt that pres-
ence again. She thought she had gotten rid of it. That it was gone
for good this time.
A growl came from behind her, but there were no animals
that would ever go by the Pond of Whispers. She started running as
fast as she could back to the house where she sleeps, looking be-
hind her as she does. She then looks in front of her and her eyes
widen as she tries to stop in her tracks, but it’s already too late.
Luna tackles someone to the ground by accident.
This lady had long, sleek brown hair that goes just past her
bosom, her eyes were such a pretty emerald green, and had a figure
that all the boys—and ladies alike—would just love to stare at all
day.
The woman kindly shoved Luna off of her and proceeded
to help her up on her feet.
“You oughta watch where you're going, miss,” she chided.
“I am so sorry Miss Flair!” Luna exclaimed. “I just thought
I heard something growl at me.”

Flair scrunched her face in confusion. She didn’t need to

tell Luna that animals won’t step foot by the pond. The thought of
something even being close to the pond that is not a human was
really worrisome. Luna knew this, too.
They looked out to the pond while Flair held Luna close to
her side. Anything that can be around the pond that is not human is
considered the most evil being. They were quiet and tried to focus
on this entity that could possibly be lingering around the pond.
Nothing.

Chapter 2
T h e r e s a F l a i r

T heresa Flair is a beautiful woman. The most beautiful in the

village for a woman her age. Others would get extremely
jealous of her. Witches from other covens would try to hex
her but to no avail. She was many protective wards on her body
and wears many amulets which means, technically, she’s invinci-
ble, but still mortal.
In the past, she was just as obsessed with magik as she is
today. She would run down to her parent’s basement to practice
controlling her old and new powers. Over the years she has gotten
stronger and stronger, wielding the most powerful magik in the
land. That was until Luna Lightsmith was born.
Luna has always looked at Flair as a huge role model in her
life. She would also look to her as a parental figure. Flair already
knew how Luna’s parents were like and did not like them very
much. She has always been willing to take Luna in as her own.
Flair does not have any children. And is not married. And is
just about to turn thirty-six years old—a turnoff for most of the
sexist men in the village. She does not want love, though. She is an
independent woman who will not let anyone mess with her. God
forbid someone does.
She was Luna’s magik teacher. Even though that the teach-
ing of magik was forbidden, she still did it in the comfort of her

own home. She would make it seem like she was just a normal
teacher that would rather teach from her house. Every day a group
of kids, about 10 to 20, would go to her house and be taught the
“basics” of life—basics meaning magik.

Chapter 3
[ i n s e r t c h a p t e r n a m e h e r e ]

L una Lightsmith was very shy when she was just a little kid. She
did not have that many friends growing up because her parents
were scared that she would accidentally use her magic
around others. She didn't though. She was able to control her gifts
immediately after she came out of the womb. There has not been a
case of that for over two hundred years. In the SM community,
they consider Luna as the Chosen One.
The Chosen One has the most powerful magic in all of cre-
ation. Usually, every spell that is cast has a consequence or a
“payment” depending on how strong the spell is. Every spell has a
cause and effect. The cause—the spell—gets placed on the castee,
and the effect—the consequence—gets placed on the caster. For
example, casting a really powerful spell can take up a lot of mana,
also known as energy. This is not the case for Luna.
Since Luna is the Chosen One, she can tap into the purest
forms of magik. That goes for all types of magik, too. She does not
have to suffer from the consequences of her castings and her mana
cannot be drained.
All of the covens know about Luna being the Chosen One.
Every single coven loves Luna and wishes that she would join
theirs, but she does not want to. She is her own coven. A warrior.
With a teacher as her sidekick.
