The Auburn Police Department is encouraging residents to drop off unused, expired, or unwanted prescription drugs at two locations on April 24, 2021 for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The locations, Wegmans on Loop Road and Kinney Drugs on Owasco Street, will accept tablets, capsules, and patches between 10am and 2pm. This initiative addresses public safety and health issues as unused prescription drugs in homes can be accidentally ingested, stolen, misused, or abused, and improper disposal methods can harm the environment.

Public Safety and Public Health
This initiative addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. Unused prescription medications in homes can be accidentally ingested, stolen, misused and abused. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show most abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. Also, Americans know that outdated methods for disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – pose potential safety and health hazards.
