A situation I occasionally get into with more aggressive decision makers, when calling to set an
appointment is "You've got me on the phone now, and I'll give you 5 minutes. Wow me".
Here's my response:
Mr/Mrs Customer, I understand that your time is valuable, that's something that I understood before I looked you
up, before I researched you, before I pressed the buttons on my phone to make this call. I understand this
because it's the nature of your business, the nature of our business. One thing a lot of people don't understand
however, is that my time is also valuable, and I've spent this valuable time creating a solution to a problem I
already know you have.
Unfortunately or otherwise, I won't be able to give you a 5 minute pitch, because that would be doing both of us a
harsh disservice, this is a lot of quality information that can't possibly be packaged into five minutes. Do you know
what gets packaged in five minutes? McDonald's. Would you seriously solve a critical issue over a 5 minute pitch?
I certainly wouldn't.
I will tell you one thing though, if you give me a chance to actually sit down with you and go over my solution, like
two business people doing business, I can guarantee you will leave the meeting with a new perspective, and I
guarantee you'll be happy with the time you spent.
So, what time do you want to set up to sit down with me, I am available next week, I can do in person or over the
phone if you have access to a computer.

Who are the mental degenerates you're calling who will sit quietly and listen to you recite a paragraph?
Unless you're calling the Association of Retarded Trailer Owners or autodialing landlines to sell fraud
products, no real person is going to sit and listen to this crap.
I've had a long week already, and I'm drunk and angry. Sorry. But I'm serious, what potential customer
would sit quietly and listen to a rehearsed pitch like this? Do you work in a call center?
It is better than a half ass pitch within 5 mins.. because what I sell is more advanced than something
that can be explained within that timeframe... Haha no need to go off on me so hard man..
As to your question - Who says "i'll give you 5 minutes. Wow me?"
Decision makers who I call are the ones who say that. Do you think I just made this scenario up
because I was bored?
This response has since worked for me. I phrase it slightly different depending on the situation, but the
over all approach has proven itself to work, IME. As a matter of fact I used it last week and setup a very
productive meeting.
It's still good content and I have no problem with it being re-posted, but I feel the fact this is a re-post
should be noted.
Edit - I posted this before reading all the responses. Looks like this has already been brought up.
Any reason for the pause in between the close? Everything I know to be true would tell me not to do that.
Please share your insight as clearly it is working for you..... It is completely different than what I do is all.
The silence is a call to action.. Most smart business people understand that something so advanced
cannot be explained within 5 minutes. And if they don't they are clearly a not qualifed prospect.. So you
can move on.
If they say yes (which 70-80% of the time they do, when i come across this objection), then you move
forward and set the meeting..
