Cold Calling Scenario: You've Got 5 Minutes
Advice

Sorry this is a repost... Look at the comments for the original link

A situation I occasionally get into with more aggressive decision makers, when calling to set an
appointment is "You've got me on the phone now, and I'll give you 5 minutes. Wow me".

Here's my response:

Mr/Mrs Customer, I understand that your time is valuable, that's something that I understood before I looked you
up, before I researched you, before I pressed the buttons on my phone to make this call. I understand this
because it's the nature of your business, the nature of our business. One thing a lot of people don't understand
however, is that my time is also valuable, and I've spent this valuable time creating a solution to a problem I
already know you have.

Unfortunately or otherwise, I won't be able to give you a 5 minute pitch, because that would be doing both of us a
harsh disservice, this is a lot of quality information that can't possibly be packaged into five minutes. Do you know
what gets packaged in five minutes? McDonald's. Would you seriously solve a critical issue over a 5 minute pitch?

I certainly wouldn't.

I will tell you one thing though, if you give me a chance to actually sit down with you and go over my solution, like
two business people doing business, I can guarantee you will leave the meeting with a new perspective, and I
guarantee you'll be happy with the time you spent.

Silence for like 15~ish seconds

So, what time do you want to set up to sit down with me, I am available next week, I can do in person or over the
phone if you have access to a computer.

~70% appointment close ratio over 11 years.

Brand new account and all he has done is repost old threads. I thought this sounded familiar, and once
I read "McDonalds" I remembered that this wasn't new.

Thanks for giving credit where credit is due.

~70% appointment close ratio over 11 years.

Respectfully: Bull. Shit.

Who are the mental degenerates you're calling who will sit quietly and listen to you recite a paragraph?
Unless you're calling the Association of Retarded Trailer Owners or autodialing landlines to sell fraud
products, no real person is going to sit and listen to this crap.

I've had a long week already, and I'm drunk and angry. Sorry. But I'm serious, what potential customer
would sit quietly and listen to a rehearsed pitch like this? Do you work in a call center?

I discovered this message a long time ago and I have used it when I come across this objection... It has
been very effective for me to set meetings. Atleast I get a yes or no.. so I knoW to move on or not...

It is better than a half ass pitch within 5 mins.. because what I sell is more advanced than something
that can be explained within that timeframe... Haha no need to go off on me so hard man..

Seriously. And who says, "I'll give you 5 minutes. Wow me"?

This is actually a question I posted a while back that has been re-posted. The response came from
someone who is no longer active here.

As to your question - Who says "i'll give you 5 minutes. Wow me?"

Decision makers who I call are the ones who say that. Do you think I just made this scenario up
because I was bored?

I get it a lot... The prospects im calling are flooded by phone calls by the same reps, with the same
style, and hear the same thing over and over again.. This method allows me to stand out.

This response is for a particular situation of when a Decision Maker is not accepting your offer for a
meeting, and challenging you to impress him with your pitch right then and there, with sever time
restraints. It has nothing to do with the product being sold.

If you take the DM's bait you'll fail, as I did previously in this situation. That's the whole point Free
Search of this
approach, to not fall into the DM's lose-lose "opportunity" which is really nothing more than a trap.

This response has since worked for me. I phrase it slightly different depending on the situation, but the
over all approach has proven itself to work, IME. As a matter of fact I used it last week and setup a very
productive meeting.

Woah, easy, I am not sure if this works, I know it wouldn't for me, also, it goes against everything I ever
teach, but if it works for him, we should listen and see if it can help us....

If you come across this objection, try it out. If they say okay, you set the meeting. If they say no, then
they are clearly not qualified to do business with you, and move onto the next one..

Just so everyone is aware, this is a question I posted a while back that has been re-posted. The response
came from someone who is no longer active here.

It's still good content and I have no problem with it being re-posted, but I feel the fact this is a re-post
should be noted.

Edit - I posted this before reading all the responses. Looks like this has already been brought up.

I am confused with the close???? You tell them to sit down with you and then wait3 15 seconds?
Search Free
WHY?

Then you go for the close?

Any reason for the pause in between the close? Everything I know to be true would tell me not to do that.
Please share your insight as clearly it is working for you..... It is completely different than what I do is all.

It is a pretty aggressive close.

The silence is a call to action.. Most smart business people understand that something so advanced
cannot be explained within 5 minutes. And if they don't they are clearly a not qualifed prospect.. So you
can move on.

If they say yes (which 70-80% of the time they do, when i come across this objection), then you move
forward and set the meeting..

I think the silence just implies it grabs the person's attention. This is OPs tactic for closing on an
appointment with decision makers that otherwise wouldn't give you more than 5 minutes to "impress
me."

Count to 15 seconds and realize how awkward it is.

The adage is that the first person who talks loses. In this case, if the prospect is silent they're either
digesting what you've just told them or are unimpressed. Either way it saves time to simply go for the
close and either set the appointment or move on.
