RAPID

AUTOMATIZED
NAMING &
WORKING
MEMORY
An Infographic to help understand the importance RAN & WM

What is RAN and WM?

RAN stands for Rapid

Automatized Naming. This is the
ability to name things as fast as
possible as visually presented
(colors, objects, letters).
WM stands for Working Memory.
Working Memory is used to
describe the ability to take new
information and turn around and
use it during a task.

Why is it assessed?

Both RAN and WM are assessed

because they are closely related to
reading. RAN and WM scores can
predict reading outcomes of students
at an early stage. If difficulties are
caught early, intervention can begin,
which will help students succeed in the
future!

Instructional Decisions
and SPED services

Since RAN and WM are correlated closely

with reading, teachers can make instructional
decisions based on these assessment scores.
This will help the teacher understand exactly
what the child needs to ensure future
success.
SPED services may also be an option as RAN
and WM may also provide evidence for
Specific Learning Disability (SLD) in reading,
which is a disability that refers to ongoing
problems in one subject area.

RAN and WM scores may lead to the breakthrough that

your child needs.
